Need to understand and to exploit my internet provider capping bug reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- anonimax1818 · 2023-12-31 03:25 I'm now connected using my phone hotspot I have an unlimited internet connection but capped at 2mb only good for google staff, however when I use the hotspot I can watch 2+ YouTube videos at the same time at 4k quality . And I did a bit of research and I found that everything related to google I can browse with full bandwidth no capping at all . What I need now is answers to why is that possible ? and how I can exploit it? to be able to download and access other websites with full bandwidth, I'm thinking about a google proxy if that a thing but I have no clue about it if it something possible in the first place Thanks in advance..... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- piano1029 · 2023-12-31 03:52 Youtube lies about 4K, it's still a lot of pixels but very low bandwidth. Does speedtest.net show a high speed? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- anonimax1818 · 2023-12-31 03:53 speed test shows 2mb only ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DeusExMaChino · 2023-12-31 03:55 4K is meaningless without bitrate, audio stream, actual hard bandwidth numbers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- piano1029 · 2023-12-31 04:05 Then it's 2mb, no way to get around it ---------------------------------------------------------------------- anonimax1818 · 2023-12-31 04:12 well I normally can't watch videos more that 720p or at best 1028p however now I can play 3 4k videos at once so there is definitely a way somehow related to google because I can't play videos in any other website without waiting and watching at low quality. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -ShavingPrivateRyan- · 2023-12-31 04:18 If it’s truly EVERYTHING related to google, you could setup a VPN on a VM in GCP and tunnel through that. But I doubt that would actually work. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- piano1029 · 2023-12-31 04:19 The way Google does it is lying, your ISP just gives your connection a set limit without any way to get around it ---------------------------------------------------------------------- anonimax1818 · 2023-12-31 04:28 needs a bit of work but I guess it worth trying I already tried some basic ones like using google translate as a proxy I know it's an old trick but I had to try it but sadly it didn't work . I read about a google mobilizer trick too but I guess that's old new I couldn't find this mobilizer anywhere . ---------------------------------------------------------------------- anonimax1818 · 2023-12-31 04:35 Well I don't understand your point because 3 4k YouTube videos played at once is at least 100MB speed, so where google actually lied here I can't get it, if google is actually lying to the internet provider then how they managed to do it? at this point all I care about is the knowledge on HOW they did it. my head hurts because I already know what you said about the bandwidth being limited and you can't get more than they provide but still how this is possible ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RedditSlayer2020 · 2023-12-31 06:05 Dude just measure your Internet speed on your devices. Tons of application for that. ISPs cap your speed at network level, so either you have a cap or you don't. In 2023 a "bug" that accidentally allows an unmetered connection is extremely rare. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Senkyou · 2023-12-31 06:40 If I tell you I'm giving you a horse, but actually give you a dog, I lied, right? My pet store doesn't care that I sold it to you. My car doesn't care that I sold it to you. Neither cares that I lied. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ClassicGOD · 2023-12-31 08:24 ISP can throttle your traffic based on destination. If they decided not to throttle Google services they can do that and it is likely not a bug. This was actually quite popular with cell service providers in my country few years back. They had agreements with Facebook that not only made the Facebook traffic unthrottled but also it did not count towards your data cap. They also had plans where Netflix and/or other media services like Tidal were unthrottled. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- esturniolo · 2023-12-31 08:41 Unpopular opinion: Why is this posted in the self hosted sub? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FuriousRageSE · 2023-12-31 08:48 >If it’s truly EVERYTHING related to google Do you mean, the uncapped full speed thing? Its really an american thing that corps pays for express highway to their servers, and general slow down for other services that dont pay for fast speed to them. Very Corporate America thing to do. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ruimikemau · 2023-12-31 09:15 Did Joe Biden ever restore the net neutrality laws that Trump shut down? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rdaneelolivaw79 · 2023-12-31 10:12 It's not everything. This is a pretty standard thing operators do: Google gives them equipment called Google Global Cache which the operator runs in their own network. GGC serves YouTube and sometimes Android Play store content. Operators then zero rate that traffic from their own GGC Nodes since it costs a lot less to deliver it ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nefarious_bumpps · 2023-12-31 15:55 That reminds me to test the TTL hack on my new phone to see if it still works. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Brief-Big-4131 · 2023-12-31 18:07 Hey there! So, it sounds like your current network might have some sort of "zero-rating" deal with Google, which means data you use on Google-related sites doesn't count towards your cap. ISPs sometimes have these deals with certain companies. For streaming 4K videos on YouTube via your hotspot, it's possible your mobile network isn't throttling speeds for video streaming, allowing you to use more bandwidth. As for expanding this to other websites, it might be a little tricky. You mentioned using a Google proxy, which will only help if it's Google-specific data that has the preferential treatment on your network. I'm not sure if these exist, but you could try using a VPN. It could potentially let you route all your traffic as if it were Google traffic, though your mileage may vary as ISPs are usually pretty good at detecting VPN traffic. Just remember, messing with your ISP's policies can sometimes lead to trouble, so proceed with caution. Hope this helps!
