RPi 4 8GB SATA SSD stability problems reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Rusei · 2023-12-30 23:37 Hello guys I have a pretty modest setup consisting of a server and a raspberry. Recently I purchased another RPi 4 with 8GB of ram with the idea of attaching it to a 2TB SSD and running immich+maybe a file sync tool (I know, not ideal setup for immich but for test purposes I will go with it). I am running into some stability issues since I installed immich, the ssd unmounts and the rpi does not recognize it. I kinda works now if I connect it to the usb 2.0 port, however it disconnects shortly after. It does not work anymore in the usb 3.0 port. My question is, is this a somehow known issue, is there some kind of configuration that I missed? Could it be an issue with the enclosure of the ssd? I did some research and followed [this guide](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AenM-JrG098&t=396s) to configure the "quirks", without luck. What would it be a good quality enclosure to avoid this issue? I also thought about the possibility of the power provided by the official adapter not being enough. What would it be a good quality powered USb hub if this is the case? I am a bit out of ideas here, but do not want to go and spend more money into enclosures/adapters without knowing what I am getting. Thanks in advance. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2023-12-30 23:37 [removed] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Eirikr70 · 2023-12-31 00:00 My observation is I have never been able to have a system SSD to be recognised on USB 3 ports on the Pi 4. I had to move it to USB 2 port. But I have never encountered any disconnection problem on USB 2 port. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- JimmyRecard · 2023-12-31 00:59 In my experience, external disks randomly disconnecting is almost always result of USB devices drawing too much power. Do you have anything else connected to the same Pi's USBs? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Rusei · 2023-12-31 08:56 No, I dont. However could be that the upload of the images+the AI analysis and tagging could draw too much power resulting on this. Which powered adapter/brand do you recommend as a good quality interfsce to avoid this? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- JimmyRecard · 2023-12-31 09:44 What Pi is doing shouldn't matter as long as the Pi's own power supply is sufficient. Max power draw for all the USBs on Pi 4 is 1.2 amps (shared between all the USBs, but also available on just one, if necessary). Can you check your SSD and see what's it's power draw is? If it is more than this, that's your problem. I find it a bit surprising through because I had a spinning unpowered hard drive running off a Pi 4 without issues. I only started seeing issues when I added another spinning drive. I thought an SSD would draw less power given that it has no moving parts. In any case, if it is the power draw issue, a simple solution is plugging your SSD using a powered hub with external power. That's what I did with my two spinning HDD and now that they have external power and aren't drawing it from the Pi, they are rock solid and I have no more issues. It set me back like 10 euro, super cheap. It's also worth checking the actual supply to the Pi itself. You need to provide 5V / 3A. Any USB C power supply with at least this rating will do. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Rusei · 2023-12-31 10:09 The power supply is the official one, so 5V/3A. The SSD is a Samsung 870 QVO 2TB. I checked and max power draw sgould be about 3W under load. I also think that just USB would be sufficient, hence my thought that it might be either software configuration or somehow the enclosure (?). I read that some controllers in the enclosures might cause issues, however I was not able to pin point good and bad enclosures. Thank you for your reply.
