remote mount of a file share reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Kevin_Cossaboon · 2023-12-30 13:19 Working through many setups at home. I have Synology NAS(s) that I do like, set up with file protection (RAID) and off-site backup (hyperbackup). Now setting up Ubuntu servers, mostly for Docker host, and like having the 'data' on the NAS. The network is a 10GE. I have been working on the 'ultimate' CIF mount, and continue to hit permission issues and other items. three questions 1) Is CIF the right move here, or should I learn NFS or something else? 2) Should I use FSTAB or have the container mount the share 3) assuming CIF is the best devil, how would you improve; ``` //10.10.10.2/Paperless-ngx /mnt/data/NAS2/Paperless-ngx cifs vers =3.0,credentials=/home/user/.sharelogin,iocharset=utf8,noauto,x- systemd.automount,x-systemd.idle- timeout=30,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777 0 0 ``` in the etc/fstab ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- weischin · 2023-12-30 13:50 1. CIF is correct 2. Use FSTAB and all containers will have access when needed through the use of a volume 3. Instead of `file_mode` and `dir_mode` use `uid=1000,gid=1000,forceuid,forcegid` ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Kevin_Cossaboon · 2023-12-30 16:22 Thank You I assume (will google) this sets the user and group of the file share. Would this be the user on the NAS? My main userID on the NAS is one, but to keep things tiddy I created a user for CIF Shares and only add that user to the shares that the Ubuntu server should access (not great security, but a layer) I assume to find the UID for the ubuntuUSER, I would SSH to the NAS log in as that user and do the ID command? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- weischin · 2023-12-31 01:51 Usually our UID and GID is 1000 on Ubuntu but use your ID if you have designated one for your user. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Kevin_Cossaboon · 2023-12-31 15:17 Thank You - works great.
