My selfhosting journey in 2023 reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Developer_Akash 路 2023-12-30 13:00 Compiled my self hosting journey in 2023: https://akashrajpurohit.com/blog/my-self-hosting-journey-in-2023/ I started my homelab exploration journey in January 2023 and it has been such a great learning experience. I was self hosting some of the services I love and use, but on public cloud or some other PaaS. I know I have barely scratched the surface and hence it excites me to look forward to 2024. How was your year? Do share if you have any interesting experiences, I would love to read and learn from them. Happy New Year 馃檶 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jonteponte71 路 2023-12-30 13:30 I finally made some progress this year after running pretty much only Jellyfin and Synology Photos on my Synology NAS for a couple of years. An extended sick leave and boredom made me dig into my selfhosting bookmarks and I am now running 18 docker containers. The next step is going to be moving my docker host to a HP Elitedesk mini I got for cheap. Turns out that having 18 containers running on a NAS makes the disks in it grind 24/7 which would be OK if it wasn鈥檛 for the fact that my NAS is in the middle of my apartment and I hear it all the time :) So next up is probably going to be installing proxmox on it and go from there. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Developer_Akash 路 2023-12-30 13:35 That's great, good luck with it. Also one question, what made you decide switching to proxmox from Synology? My plan is to build a NAS as well and I've started reading about it and want to understand what are some primary reasons people tend to choose one system over the other. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- darthrater78 路 2023-12-30 13:47 If there's one thing i think you errored on in your journey, it was the .local domain. MDNS is reserved for .local and I had done the same thing and it caused me a lot of headaches with IOT stuff until I changed it to a proper tld. Other than that, great journey. I have some similar moves on my system, and if I may recommend technitium for DNS and PHPIPAM for IPAM. https://github.com/darthrater78/phpipam-darth ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sahjanivishal 路 2023-12-30 14:10 Great setup! Good to see a fellow self-hoster here in India.. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Developer_Akash 路 2023-12-30 14:21 馃珎 Would love to know more about your self hosting journey, do share if you have posted it somewhere. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Developer_Akash 路 2023-12-30 14:22 Do you have any content that I can follow up along with the issues you've seen with .local domain (will check myself as well) And looking forward to read about your journey, thanks for sharing the link! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- darthrater78 路 2023-12-30 14:41 Using Home assistant with ESPhome, I was having a lot of trouble getting my nodes to use to connect properly over their DNS name, found my use of .local was messing things up. Reworked my network to use a different tld and the problems went away. https://www.reddit.com/r/sysadmin/s/CkOiob3WhC ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jonteponte71 路 2023-12-30 14:46 It鈥檚 mainly about moving the applications from spinning harddrives to silent ssd鈥檚 (in the minipc). And also some additional juice and flexibility. The CPU in my NAS is pretty weak and adding much beyond 30 containers or so is probably not a good idea. So I want to go back to just having it serve files and managing backups. Installing proxmox on the minipc is primarily because it鈥檚 so flexible and a great platform for testing things out. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Amit94302 路 2023-12-30 15:25 Started with a Pi 4 (4GB) in 2019 with docker and compose. Now I have 2 Pi 4 (8GB), 2 proxmox nodes (HP EliteDesk 800 G6 (64GB RAM), Lenovo ThinkStation P3 Ultra (40GB RAM)). Hoping to upgrade the P3 Ultra to 128GB RAM in future. I have moved to docker swarm, running about 90 docker containers. Will try kubernetes in 2023. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Developer_Akash 路 2023-12-30 15:40 90 docker containers! Can you share on a high level what are these containers running? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Amit94302 路 2023-12-30 15:55 1. Immich 2. Jellyfin & Plex (with \*arr stack) 3. Navidrome for music 4. Grafana with VictoriaMetrics for monitoring 5. Traefik as reverse proxy & crowdsec 6. Code-sever (VS code in browser) 7. AdguardHome for adblocking 8. HomeAssistant 9. Vikunja for todo 10. OwnCloud OCIS as cloud storage 11. Aria2 for downloading, kopia for backup, homebox for inventory management & many more. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Developer_Akash 路 2023-12-30 16:03 This is great, thanks for sharing 馃檶 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- untilthewhale 路 2023-12-30 16:07 Cool. I'm from soft dev background and about to start my journey in next couple of days - 2024 鉁岋笍 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Developer_Akash 路 2023-12-30 16:09 That's awesome! It might become overwhelming in start depending on your previous experience but it will be an amazing journey. Good luck with it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- untilthewhale 路 2023-12-30 16:16 Hey Akash, glad to connect with you. Fellow indian here. Took a glance at your webpage. How do these Pis' perform if we talk about video transcoding? Is it powerful enough to transcode 4k down to 1080p for 2 simultaneous streams? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Developer_Akash 路 2023-12-30 16:19 So currently my jellyfin + are stack is running on the old laptop server and it works fine for single stream and have noticed that it starts to struggle with 2 simultaneous streams. I have not yet tested this on Rpi's but from the jellyfin doc, I remember reading that transcoding is not recommended on Raspberry Pi or something around that lines. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- untilthewhale 路 2023-12-30 16:26 Gotcha, thanks and good luck with 2024 馃挭 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Juls317 路 2023-12-30 17:25 I'm actually thinking of migrating my Synology setup as well. I severely underestimated how much Docker exploration I would do and went from just running Syno Photos, Drive, Plex and the Arrs to all of that, Actual, Podgrab, Wallos, Grocy, Ghost, etc. I have no idea if I'm even close to smart enough to manage all of that in a setup other than what I have though, so much to (re-)learn! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Kofl 路 2023-12-30 18:42 Great, but the docker compose Link for Jellyfin is not working. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jonteponte71 路 2023-12-30 18:54 As long as those containers run with docker compose (through portainer or something else), it should be fairly easy to get them up and running anywhere else. Even if it鈥檚 just baremetal Ubuntu or something. Most of my containers are deployed like that. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CPE1373 路 2023-12-30 19:40 Did you recently have an incident with the ||Shibuya|| server? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Juls317 路 2023-12-30 20:17 Most of them were done with compose, though almost entirely with SSH rather than Portainer. For some reason I just love the process of having to write out the commands and everything. I probably could be better about consolidating multiple services into one compose file just to keep things a bit more tidy though. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jonteponte71 路 2023-12-30 20:48 You don鈥檛 need to consolidate anything. A compose file should only contain the dependencies that a specific application needs to run. It also makes it easier to backup and restore per application if for example you break something when upgrading an application (container). That way you can also easily migrate applications one by one to another docker host. While keeping the same volume bindings (as long as those are shared from the NAS). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ankleson 路 2023-12-30 22:34 Do you use the [linkding injector](https://github.com/Fivefold/linkding-injector)? I feel like this transformed my bookmarking experience from useless digital storage into something actually useful. There's been a few times already where I'm googling a programming issue and I already had a stackoverflow thread bookmarked that saved me searching. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Developer_Akash 路 2023-12-31 01:31 Wow this is awesome, I didn't know about this before but definitely giving it a shot soon. Thanks for sharing this馃檶 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Developer_Akash 路 2023-12-31 01:32 You are my Specialz *intensifies* 馃拃 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Developer_Akash 路 2023-12-31 01:33 Do you have the correct volume mapping? The setup works fine for me, can you share some more details on what is not working exactly? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Invisiblelandscapes 路 2023-12-31 03:52 Holy crap! I couldn鈥檛 figure it out months ago and gave up. Thank you kindly. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheRyGuy994 路 2023-12-31 04:01 My year went kind of like this: Jan: what are dockers? Unraid? what' that Feb: Dockers are cool! March: PLEX CAN DO WHAT?!?! April: IMMICH WOW THIS IS AMAZING. May: I need more space..... How do I set up my internal DNS June: How do I get back home? VPN? What's a reverse proxy? July: \*buys domain\*. Ahhh CNAME everything then NGINX Aug: self host my own email? what can go wrong..... Sep: jk... wow mxroute sells a lifetime for cheap. DKIM, SPF, DMARC. Oct: How do I make my own docker to keep track of my equipment and assets? I wish there was something like that like immich. Nov: Python?... Let me try....Here comes [MATER](https://github.com/RyGuy994/MATER) Dec: Wow... Other people want to help out?! [Discord](https://discord.gg/TqjaCt6tEq) It is a fun ride. I'm so glad I found this and I can't wait to see what I'm going to learn in '24! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- darthrater78 路 2023-12-31 04:02 Excellent! Glad to help. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Developer_Akash 路 2023-12-31 04:04 Learned something every month馃挭 That's great, immich is something I'm also looking forward to self host soon after I build a NAS and have more storage so I can move everything out of my Google drive and only keep encrypted backups there as off-site backups or look into Cloudflare R2. So lots of storage related stuff for upcoming year for me. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Darkchamber292 路 2023-12-31 07:01 Look into Unraid ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Kofl 路 2023-12-31 07:05 The file download is not working from the website. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Technical-Archer8259 路 2023-12-31 08:02 Can you make a video of using all this in, Am noob and just trying to know why would someone need to do it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- matieuxx 路 2023-12-31 10:05 Nice job, I started this year as well, but progressing in a much slower pace than you due to lack of time. I really like your blog design as well, did you develop it from scratch or did you use something existant (like a template or Open source app)? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- c0delama 路 2023-12-31 10:30 How do you like VictoriaMetrics? Did you try InfluxDB too? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Developer_Akash 路 2023-12-31 12:15 Thanks, anyhow slow progression is better than no progression imo so kudos to you for keeping up with it 馃檶 I have an article written recently when I migrated the website this year and can be found [here](https://akashrajpurohit.com/blog/embracing-the-future- migrating-from-nextjs-to-astro/#adoption-of-a-new-design), but the TL;DR is it is inspired from tailwindui template called [spotlight](https://tailwindui.com/templates/spotlight) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sahjanivishal 路 2023-12-31 13:57 Haven't posted it anywhere but after seeing this post I think I should... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- edorsey20 路 2023-12-31 14:21 fwiw, configuring a container with SSH is kind of an anti pattern, meaning if that container is destroyed, you鈥檒l have to redo all of those SSH commands. Be careful! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CPE1373 路 2023-12-31 20:16 Thats really funny. 馃槶 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mwhandat 路 2023-12-31 22:05 Look into adding some Velcro strips (the soft part) to the NAS bays, google it, there鈥檚 a few posts on Reddit and to me that reduced the noise like an order of magnitude
