To get a Synology or DIY with Self Hosted for backup NAS, NVR, 24/7 machine reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sushikingdom · 2023-12-30 02:25 Current Setup: * **Mini PC N100 with OpenMediaVault + CasaOS + Docker (*****My NAS*****)** 3TB of SSD storage and connected to 16TB of WD External Easystore drive Running mostly Tailscale, Jellyfin, and Immich * **Mini PC with n5095 (My** ***Media Streaming Server***\*\*)\*\* Running Kodi and connected to TV. I am purchasing cameras and would like a NVR that records footage and keeps for long time. Would like this footage to be captured and stored in this backup NAS. I expect this to be on 24/7, unlike the other 2 Mini PCs. I was gifted a DAS and 2x4TB CMR Hard Drives that I was planning to use with this Mini PC. Per my current setup, is what I want to do with the N95 Mini PC worth it? Would it make more sense to just pick up a Synology 2-Bay DiskStation DS223j (Diskless)? I already have the drives that I can utilize to mirror and record, although CMR might not be best for NVR usage. Other option is to save the money and use what I got with the N95 and the DAS. I could run another instance of OpenMediaVault and I've heard good things about Frigate? Although, I guess I can also shell out some money Blue Iris or whatever its called. Thoughts? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LifeLeg5 · 2023-12-30 02:41 I'm running a similar setup on one n100+4tbNAS (plex + frigate + several other selfhosted stuff) and uses \~8g ram, <20% cpu with 1 24/7 camera with detection. The frigate recordings (detection is indeed top tier) I keep for 3-4 weeks, I don't bother backing up media since those can be redownloaded anyway. I use proxmox for this setup, makes everything easier to manage ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sushikingdom · 2023-12-30 03:25 Dumb question but what OS are you running for Plex, Frigate, etc? Proxmox is for VMs but you would need like Unraid, OMV, TrueNAS, or even Debian with Docker for the other Self Hosted software, no? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LifeLeg5 · 2023-12-30 04:28 proxmox is for VMs and linux containers (LXCs) for the containers, debian LXCs, but you have a lot of choices and there are some with docker already pre-installed, I just like to keep mine as small/convenient as possible to orchestrate. you can install anything on LXCs as you would with VMs but with much less overhead, which is why I have \~20 of them, each with a single purpose.
