Moving away from a rPi 4 reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- amusedsealion · 2023-12-29 18:03 Hey everyone. I’ve been reading and learning a lot from this sub and now I need your help in pointing me on the right direction regarding the hardware to choose for my use case. Currently I’m running some services on a rPi 4 32 bits 4GB, namely pihole, home assistant, teslamate and some *arr services. Alongside, I have an old Synology NAS for storage where I’m running transmission for torrents, integrated with the *arr services. This setup has been running fine but I’m starting to be limited by it. Some of the services newest versions don’t support the rPi 32 bits arm processor, including Immich which I’m planning to start using as a replacement for Google Photos. I’m not sure yet but I might start using jellyfin as well. I’d like to keep the NAS for storage, so the new hardware would be more for having the services installed and running. Having said that, which hardware do you recommend me? Thanks in advance. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Casseiopei · 2023-12-29 18:18 If you’re looking to stay compact, look into Optiplex Micro’s on eBay. The 3050 and up have both sata and NVMe connections. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- amusedsealion · 2023-12-29 18:25 Definitely something compact and energy efficient. Will look into those. Thanks. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rosspeplow · 2023-12-29 18:29 Hang on isn’t the Pi 4 64bit? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- k9lego · 2023-12-29 18:54 I would suggest installing the 64 bit OS for the Pi 4, Immich supports the Pi 4 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Pesfreak92 · 2023-12-29 19:00 If you want to buy new hardware that´s okay but you can use 64-bit Software on the Pi4. You need to install the 64-Bit OS. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- billysmusic · 2023-12-29 19:10 It is but there is and was the 32-bit option for the OS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- billysmusic · 2023-12-29 19:11 You can also switch to the 64-bit kernel, but that leaves you with 32-bit libraries. I also vote for reinstall. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- utopiah · 2023-12-29 20:14 Pi5? For Immich specifically I suggest making the first processing on a powerful machine anyway then only after move to a slower one that mostly serves data and makes incremental processing. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- amusedsealion · 2023-12-29 20:16 It looks like I was dumb and installed the 32 bits version and assumed the hardware was to blame! :( ---------------------------------------------------------------------- amusedsealion · 2023-12-29 20:16 It looks like I was dumb and installed the 32 bits version and assumed the hardware was to blame! :( ---------------------------------------------------------------------- amusedsealion · 2023-12-29 20:16 It looks like I was dumb and installed the 32 bits version and assumed the hardware was to blame! :( ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sk1nT7 · 2023-12-29 20:20 NUCs by Minisforum ---------------------------------------------------------------------- amusedsealion · 2023-12-29 20:22 I'll be starting from scratch and slowly migrating old files into it. So I guess I'll be fine with using the pi from the start. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- utopiah · 2023-12-29 20:24 I suggest monitoring resource usage anyway because its ML features are demanding. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- amusedsealion · 2023-12-29 20:29 Thanks for the advice. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Bloodrose_GW2 · 2023-12-29 20:44 Rpi 4 is actually 64-bit, download and install the newest OS. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MatthiTT · 2023-12-29 21:10 Switched to an Asus nuc and never looked back. I7 up to 64GB ram, M2 port for Coral module. A bit pricey but huge performance leap and 100 watts of consumption at full throttle. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Pesfreak92 · 2023-12-29 21:31 Good thing is you can learn now how to backup and import data from a 32 bit to a 64 bit system. It´s something :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- amusedsealion · 2023-12-29 21:32 You’re scaring me! 😩 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- maxmalkav · 2023-12-29 21:39 Aside using a 64-bit OS with the RPi, you could consider a thin- client, they are not too expensive and the allow upgrades at some degree. I am using a HP630 upgraded to 32GB RAM, 512GB SSD and a QNAP NAS as big network storage via NFS shares. It’s bigger than a RPi 4 but the form factor is still small. The power usage is around 12W at max load, IIRC. The machine does not have fans but it does not overheat neither. I have Jellyfin (no transcoding), *arr, paperless-ngx and some other services. It handles them quite well. I’m also starting to play with Immich and it’s working fine too. Paperless OCR or Immich AI will stress the CPU but the machine stays responsive. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- amusedsealion · 2023-12-29 21:40 Nice suggestion, thanks ! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- forthelurkin · 2023-12-29 21:54 How about a secondhand NUC? As another option to an Optiplex or HP mini micro. You can put proxmox on it and stack a bunch of VMs. NVMe plus SATA storage, plenty of RAM, and 4"x4" form factor. Only a little bit more power consumption at idle. I consolidated several RPis and my NAS down to one NUC and have a lot more capacity and flexibility. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- amusedsealion · 2023-12-29 22:07 Makes sense. Will look for those options. Thanks ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Legitimate_Proof · 2023-12-29 22:41 This is a good idea! Image/face recognition is vastly more resource intense than other server tasks (especially if you aren't transcoding) so it's worth considering doing image import and processing on a powerful computer like your main computer instead of majorly over- upgrading your server for an occasional task. I'm planning to do this also because I already organize incoming photos on my laptop so it makes sense to put other import processing there. And the laptop is modern and reasonably powerful while the server has a weak MIPS processor with 0.5 GB of RAM. I do the organizing with the handy "Sort manager" in Geeqie. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Varnish6588 · 2023-12-29 23:44 I bought two Lenovo Mini PC ThinkPad for $250 AUD each with processor i5 and 16Gb of ram. They are very energy efficient and decent compute power for runningm kubernetes ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jx36 · 2023-12-29 23:49 Use ubuntu 64bit or upgrade to pi5 use 23.10 until next lts release in April and switch to lts proper at that time. If sticking with po4 just use 22.04lts until April. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PatochiDesu · 2023-12-30 00:32 this week, i did the move away from 2 pi4 and replaced them with a supermicro x10drl-i and a single xeon e5 2620 v4 and 32 gb ecc memory. idle energyconsumption is same (30 Watts). In January i will upgrade to 128gb memory ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cyb3rdoc · 2023-12-30 12:38 Simplest solution is to backup your data and files on RPi4 32-bit and reinstall 64-bit version of RPi OS. I did it long back and everything works on new system. I also tried in-between 64-bit kernel with 32-bit OS but it's kind of minimal improvement setup with hardly new benefit. Installing 64-bit OS is the way, without additional dollars. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- utopiah · 2023-12-30 14:31 I briefly mentioned it in https://fabien.benetou.fr/Content/SelfHostingArtificialIntelligence but that’s how I plan to “retire” my gaming desktop, namely assisting the NAS for demanding tasks, specifically AI ones. I’m not sure yet what’s the best way to do it, e.g gradio or other interfaces, but looks like a realistic evolution of self hosting. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Bullets123 · 2023-12-31 16:47 Can I run most of your stuff on RPi 4 (4gb). Immich, some experimenting with \*arr, pihole? Or do I need the 8gb version? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- amusedsealion · 2023-12-31 17:03 Apart from Immich, I’m running all of that (and more) on a rPi 4 4GB without any issues. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Bullets123 · 2023-12-31 17:19 And you think all that + Immich will run fine? 😅 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- amusedsealion · 2023-12-31 17:30 Probably not. But I’ll give it a try and then decide if I should upgrade the hardware.
