Does self hosted VPN Chaining with Commercial Service Reduce Their Logging Potential? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wolf_eye- · 2023-12-29 12:01 I am really new to vpn also networking itself so I am in full of curiosity and thought of making a self hosted vpn, i searched the net around a bit and found the pros and cons of self hosted vpn. so my question is can you set up a self hosted vpn and connect your device to it and then connect it to a commercial aka public vpn, will it increase the security, like for example: 1.will the commercial vpn be able to log in your many activities since you first made a connection to your self hosted vpn 2.can you repeat this chain or like connect to a tor or onion vpn PS:Srry if i mispronounced something or if my questions are literally not possible or illogical ,as I said I am at the baby stage in here I am just messing around and learning about networking and vpn and love to go on.. .Also I know it would be slow logically(if you were able to connect to chains of server,I just need to see how much the term "privacy" go in this age...i appreciate any help ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NurEineSockenpuppe · 2023-12-29 12:31 Idk what the purpose would be. If you use a self hosted vpn that is either running at home or on some kind of rented infrastructure. Both have their name on you unless you use some kind of anonymous hoster. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Deathmeter · 2023-12-29 13:07 Self hosted VPN only really makes sense for circumventing censorship. I'd stick with a reputable VPN service where traffic from lots of different users are mixed together if you're worried about privacy or logging ---------------------------------------------------------------------- HearthCore · 2023-12-29 15:09 A VPN to reach home services is „different“ to a VPN to tunnel your internet through (Nord etc) Your mixing their purpose up ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wolf_eye- · 2023-12-30 16:25 But what about when you connect to the commercial vpn after self hosted vpn like vpn chaining...will the the commercial vpn be able to get the IP address of the device or will they just get the IP address of the self hosted vpn? Also Won't you get the same benefit when you chain self hosted vpn to a reputable vpn service like the traffic mixing of lot of users? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wolf_eye- · 2023-12-30 16:28 But will the logging of the commercial vpn decrease? I am mainly looking that whether the chaining of the vpns interrupt the logging that the commercial vpn does. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NurEineSockenpuppe · 2023-12-30 17:08 they will log or don't log the same stuff that they would have logged without the first vpn. The only difference is that your IP that shows up in their logs will be the IP from your first VPN. But if that VPN can be tracked back to you there is not really a point. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wolf_eye- · 2023-12-31 08:39 Oh thanks, that makes sense..
