Home server from different country reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Shurlemany · 2023-12-29 06:26 Hello r/selfhosted, I have never used Plex or any other type of media serving platform. I live in Germany and I have my main server machine in the Uk, they are connected via Tailscale. I wanted to ask how feasible that would be regarding latency, etc. I have fiber in both places. Will it work decently? Does what I am saying make any sense? Feel free to comment recommendations, I am very new to the topic! Thank you very much! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zfa · 2023-12-29 06:49 It should be no problem at all - peering from DE to UK will be good, but Plex doesn't need low latency anyway it's not like you're tring to stream a game with ms precision. As long as your upload speed on the UK side is good enough to pump the video across you should be ok. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lexutzu · 2023-12-29 08:31 I had my Plex server at home in Romania while I lived in France, I also had some game servers hosted on it. All my users are friends from Romania, I was the only one living in another country at the time. Fiber at both places. For Plex, I couldn't always direct play/stream 4K content, it would buffer so I had to convert it on the fly to 1080p. For game servers, everything was going smoothly, higher ping compared to my friends but not high enough to impact my experience. So in reality it depends how good the two ISPs are connected to each other. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- officiallyStephen · 2023-12-29 10:12 To be honest, my biggest issue is getting Plex to recognize the Tailscale connections between my devices and not use the relay, other than that I have no problems even when I have to use the relay (granted I don’t stream in 4K or anything) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Shurlemany · 2023-12-30 00:03 Will do! Thanks a lot for the help! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Shurlemany · 2023-12-30 00:03 Nice to know! Thanks a lot for the feedback! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Shurlemany · 2023-12-30 00:04 I am not very well versed into the problem you are explaining I am afraid. How can you select the relays? I imagine you are trying to avoid DERP firewall? Thanks a lot for weighting in! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- officiallyStephen · 2023-12-30 01:57 Not the DERP, the Plex relay! It tries to use the local ip address which it can’t reach, then switches to the relay. I think there is a way around it, like allow connecting through other devices, but not sure ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Shurlemany · 2023-12-30 11:54 I see! Thank you!
