Is Hetzner storage a good solution for hosting photos? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- brightwoof · 2023-12-29 05:30 As of now I’m putting photos onto my raspberry pi which also acts as a NAS and media server. I feel I should also have a secondary backup of the most important things, namely photos. I moved off google photos when it went paid and am seeking other options. Is hetzner storage viable? I currently use hetzner for their compute instance for little toy projects. Would there be a way to auto upload and view from my phone? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Silly-Ad-6341 · 2023-12-29 08:05 You could run an immich instance on the cloud and have your photos backed up that way. Works similar to Google photos and have an auto backup. However you'd still be paying for the instance so you may need to weigh the cost benefit of having Google do this for you, which would have much more redundancy and stability or doing it yourself. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- KervyN · 2023-12-29 08:10 I would think that hetzner got enough plans to keep the storage boxes alive and save. I am currently migrating my offsite backup there, so I hope it is good :-D But my offsite backup is an rsync of my restic data, so I trust thing it will detect any errors and when an error happens I can resync the backup. Hetzner is also very communicative, so maybe just ask them how they ensure that the data is safe, and what the do for it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tomhasser · 2023-12-29 08:33 I've been using the storage box for off-site backup for almost a year with restic. Works like a charm. According to restic check and partial recoveries, files are still healthy. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Academic-Switch-5592 · 2023-12-29 09:28 This. In all seriousness I’ve had hosted my cloud storage with a dedicated server provider and there was some unexpected downtime due to a fire in the electrical closet which costed about 3.75 days to get back online due to fire regulation/checks before reenergizing the data center. And you have to consider those events happening and how fuck u would be if it were to directly effect you. (Eg OVH data center fires) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Bananenhaus23 · 2023-12-29 09:48 Hetzner Storage Share + Nextcloud Memories App might be an idea ---------------------------------------------------------------------- aaronryder773 · 2023-12-29 10:00 You can go to lowendbox or lowendtalk and check for their offerings. There are like less $20/year VPS with 20 GB storage, 1GB ram and 1TB bandwidth/month. I think such VPS can be very useful! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jonteponte71 · 2023-12-29 13:39 Selfhost a photos app on the raspberry pi and offload photos/videos there. And then set up a cloud backup job of all that data to a Hetzner storage box. They seem to support a whole host of hackup solutions. Also add a local backup job to a different HD as well and you have the 3-2-1 backup strategy covered. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- brightwoof · 2023-12-29 14:34 So run immich on a compute box and then mount / forward to an external storage box? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Silly-Ad-6341 · 2023-12-29 17:19 What are you trying to solve? If it's a cost issue, I'd argue Google will still give you pretty good value in terms of features, redundancy and time trying to figure out all the issues. Not to mention Immich is still in development and has had breaking changes you'd have to update your systems If it's about owning your data, it's probably more worth it ---------------------------------------------------------------------- brightwoof · 2023-12-29 17:22 I think I'd just like to backup photos securely. run the bulk off my nas on a single external drive but have a backup if there's a failure. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Silly-Ad-6341 · 2023-12-29 18:46 Maybe rclone and encrypt to a cloud storage bucket? Archival storage strictly for backup or disaster recovery is a lot cheaper than an ongoing compute instance Or put your files on an external drive and ship to a family member or friend off site which avoids storage costs. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- brightwoof · 2023-12-29 19:06 What’s a good provider for that? Amazon glacier deep archive? Hetzner cloud storage? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MisterSalami · 2023-12-29 22:14 Just evaluating this solution. I am not a heavy user but I set up immich on a hetzner server and I am mounting a 1TB storage box via samba as the photo storage. Works well so far and unbeatable bang for the bucks imho ---------------------------------------------------------------------- brightwoof · 2023-12-29 22:25 Do you replicate the data at all in case of failure? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MisterSalami · 2023-12-30 01:03 Not really yet. You mean like an off-site backup to another location? Hetzner storage boxes have a snapshot feature but I haven't looked into that yet. I am kinda trusting the cloud vendors to do their job. When the hetzner Datacenter burns down yeah that would be shitty. It might happen but I somehow plan for it to not happen. I could mirror the data to local storage but then I could just host it locally and mirror to the cloud. My approach is that hetzner is probably more reliable than my ISP and my Hardware ---------------------------------------------------------------------- brightwoof · 2023-12-30 01:09 I think the snapshots are on the same server so if it goes down you’re sol. I think the shared server may duplicate tho ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MisterSalami · 2023-12-30 01:20 Not sure tbh I am just running this setup for a week and evaluating. And in addition it is not built for maximum high availability and disaster recovery. I usually organise more important stuff manually into albums/folders and sync them to aws S3. The hetzner setup is primarily a Google photos drop in replacement at the moment. I kinda just expect it to work ---------------------------------------------------------------------- brightwoof · 2023-12-30 01:26 Similar use case. I also want it for Google photos. But because photos are so important, I don’t want it to self implode either. Conflicted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TestTxt · 2023-12-30 01:46 Regardless of the choice, make sure to implement the 3-2-1 backup strategy! I’ve learned the hard way ---------------------------------------------------------------------- brightwoof · 2023-12-30 01:47 If you put it all on a cloud provider that does replication and redundancy then wouldn’t that be a silver bullet? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MisterSalami · 2023-12-30 06:48 My strategy would vary depending on what kind of data we are talking about. To be 99.9% failsafe you can always run some kind of backup just if the immich storage anywhere else. To your local storage, or I personally would sync to Aws s3. Could be Aws cli, rsync, restic, rclone, cronjob, not sure what is the current state of the art. But Aws comes with s slightly higher price. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TestTxt · 2023-12-30 15:11 Not really, ransomware attacks can happen on your side too, the cloud provider won’t help you with that (restoring from a backup done before the data got encrypted) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- brightwoof · 2023-12-30 16:20 Photos are the most important data imo since it can’t be redownloaded
