Looking for advice on my media server stack reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Inkfartman · 2023-12-29 01:20 I'm new to self hosting and I'm currently in the process of setting up an unraid system to use as a automated media server. Its mostly going to be used by my family and a few close friends, so I'll need to set up some sort of reverse proxy solution which I still have to look into. Here's a rough diagram of my stack that I've created so far based on research I've been doing online. https://preview.redd.it/k3ymdqeqx49c1.png?width=921&format=png&auto=we bp&s=3b974dfebdf2e60ac81368fcb70af5f9a928fd24 Please let me know if you guys have any advice on how I can improve my setup or if there's any aspects I'm missing. Bonus question: what are the best solutions for file backup/sync and photo sync for non tech savvy family members? So far I've seen that Nextcloud and PhotoPrism could be good options. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Square_Lawfulness_33 · 2023-12-29 02:33 VPN+VPS(virtual private server). Starting at $6 you can get a virtual server from Digitalocean on which you will run docker and containers such as nginx proxy manager and wg-easy(wireguard + gui). Your home server will be the client and nginx proxy manager will see your services through the VPNs ip addresses. You will also need a domain name if you don’t already have one which you can get from namecheap. From there you’ll point your domain at Digitalocean DNS server and in nginx proxy manager you can assign SSL(https) certificates to your services. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Inkfartman · 2023-12-29 04:12 Thanks for the information I have a few domains, I'll look into setting up a VPS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Square_Lawfulness_33 · 2023-12-29 04:22 forgot to mention, don't run your download client through the VPN connect to the VPS. on the $6 monthly plan you only get 1tb of internet throughput. 2tb on the $12 monthly plan. so you might want to connect the services you want to access remotely through a VPN container like gluetun, so that only those service's traffic are using the limited internet access of the VPS. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- stardarrkit · 2023-12-29 07:36 I just put together a \[starter kit\](https://github.com/stardarr/stardarr) for homelab newbies that includes a Traefik reverse proxy and instructions for setting up Cloudflare with it. You should be able to pull out Traefik from the repo, and use my existing services' labels as a guide. CF instructions \[here\]([https://www.stardarr.dev/docs/Prerequisites/ Clouflare](https://www.stardarr.dev/docs/Prerequisites/Clouflare)) Hope this is helpful! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Inkfartman · 2023-12-29 18:25 Thanks this is definitely super helpful. I'm using unraid and the cloudflare ddns and traefik services are available in the community apps store. This is probably the simplest approach I've seen so far ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2023-12-30 21:45 [removed]
