Can you disable Nextcloud's bloat? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- iso3166 · 2023-12-28 21:45 Hi, I'm looking for a solution to share files and photos with friends/family, and I used Nextcloud a few years ago but I don't really remember much about it. I'm taking a look at the UI now and it honestly feels quite bloated with features I don't want, like chat and video calling, but I haven't seen any good alternatives. I'm sure there are people who do want a full groupware solution to replace all their communications, but personally I prefer using software that just focuses on performing one function well rather than trying to be everything (and usually not being very good at it) Can you disable all of Nextcloud's extra functionality like chat and the dashboard and just have it as a slim file storage solution? I would simply run an SFTP/webdav server but I want my normie friends to be able to use it too and having a mobile app and web ui with oauth is nice. Thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- flodabo · 2023-12-28 21:51 1. login as admin. 2. go to the apps overview. 3. disable apps you dont need. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bz386 · 2023-12-28 21:51 Yes, the admin can disable individual modules, including chat and dashboard. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Legitimate_Farm_3095 · 2023-12-28 22:01 reading the manual would have told you all you needed to know ..... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- austozi · 2023-12-28 22:12 Indeed you can choose to not install the "hub" features which installs the app bundle you call bloat. Then there's nothing to disable. You could go into the administrator settings at any time and install/uninstall any app as you wish. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- realorangeone · 2023-12-28 22:17 I disable most of the extra bloat apps, it makes things run a fair bit faster. Similarly, check out their [Server Tuning](https://docs.nextcl oud.com/server/latest/admin_manual/installation/server_tuning.html) docs, which also helps make Nextcloud feel even faster. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-12-28 23:16 Did you pick something like the "all in one" version? Mine didn't come with chat and video calls enabled. In any case: you do know that all functionality is plugin (app) based, right? Including the dashboard, calendar, contacts and so on. I have an instance of nextcloud running with just files and "file retention" plugin enabled to mimick something like WeTransfer etc. works pretty well. https://docs.nextcloud.com/server/stable/admin_manual/file_workflows/r etention.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------- iso3166 · 2023-12-29 02:13 ah thanks, I know Nextcloud apps are a thing but I didn't think the chat functionality was modular since it's in the mobile apps and it didn't really give any indication on the website ---------------------------------------------------------------------- iso3166 · 2023-12-29 02:15 ah yeah I assumed all-in-one meant it installed all the dependencies like mariadb rather than optional nextcloud functionality, and I knew about Nextcloud apps but I didn't realise chat and calendar were part of that. Thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- redoubt515 · 2023-12-29 04:38 Why read the manual when you can ask a bunch of people on reddit who also have not read the manual for some half-assed and possibly accurate advice /s
