Plex and Nextcloud on fanless PC reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- vecinu95 · 2023-12-28 15:02 I bought from Aliexpress a fanless PC with Intel N100. Added 16 GB DDR5 and planning to buy 2 SSDs (most probably 2TB+4TB). I want to host on it the following (for the moment): \- Plex (without transconding, even though I have Plex Pass). I want to use it for self hosted movies/tv shows and live tv (I also have an USB TV Tuner DVB-C). \- a solution to syncronize/backup some folders from my laptop and pictures from my Android phone (ideally something similar to Google Photos). I was thinking about Nextcloud. My problem now is that I don't know what is the most efficient way to install them. I was thinking about the following: 1) installing a Linux distro (like Debian) and directly install Plex and Nextcloud on it (using docker) 2) Proxmox and separate VMs for each service Could you please suggest me the best option? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dazchad · 2023-12-28 16:34 There’s no right answer here. VMs will provide isolation, so if one gets hacked r crashes, the other won’t be affected. The downside is that VMs will require you to reserve system resources specifically to it, and that means allocating it upfront for the expected maximum load. Docker on the other hand has good isolation, but not as good as VMs. a kernel panic will bring down all services. baremetal is the simplest, but can be a source of vulnerability if not properly configured. you can also install a VM to be a docker host for the services you are ok sharing resources with. I go with docker for my setup because Im comfortable with it ---------------------------------------------------------------------- vecinu95 · 2023-12-28 21:24 Thank you for your detailed explanation! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MrHaxx1 · 2023-12-28 23:00 Most efficient would be to just use Debian and just use Docker. But I'd probably go for Proxmox and just one VM for Docker. Proxmox provides easy snapshots, backups and just more flexibility and safety in general, and you have the option to easily fire up other VMs if you'd want to. When I say safety, I mean something like in case you bork remote access to your Docker VM, you can just enter the Proxmox interface and fix it from there. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SwissOS · 2023-12-29 10:21 As others have said, there are pros and cons for each method. I personally chose 1 (Debian+Docker) because I didn't want to allocate memory to different VMs upfront. As for your photos solution, did you check out Immich? IMHO, it's better than Nextcloud (especially if you only use Nextcloud for Photos). And may I ask, which mini-PC did you buy? I am curious, as my N100 box only has 1 slot for SATA SSD, so yours seems superior. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- vecinu95 · 2023-12-29 11:47 Yes, I read a bit about both Immich and Photoprism. I plan to test them if Nextcloud will not satisfy my needs. I bought this one from Aliexpress: [link](https://a.aliexpress.com/_mrfK67a) One ssd will be connected via sata and another one nvme.
