Split resources for 3 VMs reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jimmisavage · 2023-12-28 10:01 I'm currently running a bunch of docker containers on my synology nas but want to move 3 applications off to save resources. I have an Intel DN2820FYKH NUC Mini PC N2830 2.41GHz 16GB RAM 128GB SSD and want to run 3 VMs on it. Unless there's a better way? Home assistant OS Plex server (some light sharing with a max of 3 concurrent streams at any one time, although that's exttreem and unlikely with possible transcoding 720p and 1080p). Pi-hole or alternative I think I'm going to use Proxmax as my base OS but I'm wondering what the best was to share my resources with the VMs would be? I definately want a VM for home assistant as want to run OS but would the other 2 be better on a VM or docker? I've not used Proxmax before but I think it runs docker? Any hints or tips would be appreciated. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- stupv · 2023-12-28 10:11 Proxmox doesn't 'run docker', Linux containers aren't docker containers. With that said, pihole and Plex run just fine in LXCs as does HASSOS and this is exactly how they run in my home lab ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jimmisavage · 2023-12-28 10:17 Okay cool. I've learned something already. So you're saying I can run all 3 in LXCs rather than VMs and that would fine? Do I need to assign resources to them or does that all happen on the fly? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- stupv · 2023-12-28 10:22 HomeAssistant is a VM template or docker image (which you could run in an LXC, but i would just run the VM). The other two you can just run in LXCs, LXC resource allocation is functionally the same as VM but its way faster and more flexible - LXCs dont need a reboot if you adjust RAM/CPU allocations, and they can consume more than you give them if the host has capacity available. If you want to easy-mode your way through the setup, here is a helpful repo of scripts that can configure both LXCs, the VM, and other stuff you may find interesting with a click: https://tteck.github.io/Proxmox/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jimmisavage · 2023-12-28 10:25 Nice one! I'll take a look through that link 👍
