Beginner - Looking for advice/tips/roadmap reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hgmanifold · 2023-12-28 01:11 Howdy. This all started as I have an older [MacBook Pro](https://everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook_pro/specs/macbook-pro- core-i5-2.3-13-mid-2017-retina-display-no-touch-bar- specs.html#macspecs1) that isn't my daily driver any more since I've upgraded to a [Mac Mini](https://everymac.com/systems/apple/mac_mini/specs/mac- mini-m2-8-core-cpu-10-core-gpu-2023-specs.html). I've wanted to venture into self hosting for some time and I think I'm going to give it a go. I know I'm going to have to learn a bunch but I'm able and willing! Some misc. info: * Heavily in the Apple ecosystem (iPhones, iPads, Watch, AppleTV, etc.), so the more iOS/tvOS compatible apps I can use the better. * For storage I have a 2TB WDRed in an external enclosure (for now - will absolutely be upgrading...) as well as a 2TB WDPassport to get me by. * I'm able to get around in Terminal/SSH but will need to learn more as I go (any learning resources you know/love, it would also be appreciated!) This is one of my main goals in all of this - becoming more fluent in CLI. What I'd like to achieve/run: * Basic file storage/Mac mini backup/Time Machine * Docker (with Homarr) * Home Assistant & Home Bridge * I've read on here that due to macOS there may be some issues - Do I have to go down the Proxmox rabbit hole? * Simple website (Resume & Portfolio) - Wordpress? * Plex or Jellyfin * Torrenting (Transmission) * Automated downloading (all the \*arr apps like Sonarr, Radarr, Lidarr, etc. ) * Ad-Blocking (Pi-Hole?) * Cloud Storage (Nextcloud?) * Passwords (Bitwarden/Vaultwarden) * Photos (I'm totally fine with Apple's Photos but may want to re- evaluate at a later date) * Document management (anytime or Paperless) * Game Servers (Valheim) I guess my biggest issue is where to start? I have a general idea, Docker container for most/all of it, but if there is something that is going to change the setup dramatically - like the HA running on macOS version of Docker? - I'd like to get an idea of these issues now. That ALLLL said, do you have any tips, suggestions, warnings, or app recommendations for me before I dig myself too deep... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- notdoreen · 2023-12-28 01:58 Proxmox isn't that much of a rabbit hole. It's a pretty simple set and forget virtualization software that allows you to install virtual machines on it. With that being said, I'm pretty sure you can run Docker on Mac and play around with Docker containers there. For easy testing and beginner friendly stuff I recommend linuxserver.io. They have common containers for things like file storage (File Browser) media servers, backups. Etc. Some docker run installs are as easy as copying and pasting their Docker run scripts into your terminal. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- HighMarch · 2023-12-28 03:52 If you can setup Docker, I think much of what you're aiming to accomplish can be done via containers, and get your feet in the water, per se. As far as cloud hosting goes, unless you're able to attach an array of drives to it, I think some kind of fully-enclosed NAS appliance would get you much further, with better reliability. Regardless of what's on hand, I think a Raspberry Pi + maybe a Synology, or similar pre-baked NAS appliance, would get you a LOT further than just your old laptop will, with a lot less of a headache. I am, though, an avid anti-fan of Apple, so that might just be my bias. Oh, and don't forget to check [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/selfhost ed/comments/bsp01i/welcome_to_rselfhosted_please_read_this_first/) for some guides, if you haven't already. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ro55mo · 2023-12-28 11:41 1. You need a domain. Go buy one. Its a few monetary units per year. 2. You will need a reverse proxy. This allows you to run multiple services on port 443 from one externally facing IP address. I would suggest reading up and watching some YouTube videos on this topic to get an understanding of it.
