Self hosting platform reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- unforgivencode · 2023-12-27 22:59 Hi, I'm looking to start some self hosting and am wondering what platforms people are using to make the task easier? Are people using bare metal, OS and direct install? Docker containers? Some sort of hypervisor? Dashboards? Im familiar with windows, linux, freenas, aws, azure... That being said, I do IT in my day job and want to minimize the amount of time I spend doing it after hours. So something simple and comprehensive would be great. Two primary things I plan to start with are Immich and paperless. Thanks for any help! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- naxhh · 2023-12-27 23:05 I'm using proxmox. Mostly because I knew that I wanted to run a bunch of dockers and some VM's (windows, unbuntu and others) So proxmox seemed a good fit for it. Also it has lxc so I managed to avoid using docker in most cases reducing a bit the VM layers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- KingAroan · 2023-12-27 23:08 I run proxmox and virtualized an UNRAID instance for storage. I haven't complained to much one I got everything working. But I have a couple VMs and all my dockers are on the UNRAID instance which I plan to split out at some point. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mintfresh22 · 2023-12-27 23:20 Yes ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AlexisColoun · 2023-12-27 23:44 If you want to minimize the time spend, don't self host. It is a rabbit hole that sucks you in. Not fast and not obvious, but slowly and with the worst feature creep you've ever experienced. Sure, you can host this one application, and that service sounds fun and while scrolling reddit you stumbled across this or that project. And all is fine, until the day you want to rebuild your entire tech stack as part of an upgrade. You will spend days reconfiguring everything and lie in your bed at night, sleepless and contemplating if the change from one image to another might solve your problem. But aside from that, Portainer is my go to Web GUI for everything docker. The compose integration makes it so easy to fire up services with little to no tinkering by copying the docker compose yaml from their git repos. All hosted on plain ol Debian. For virtualization, I like my ESXi server. But that's more like a toy for learning new stuff (until the feature creep starts again and I start virtualizing our gaming rigs...) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- HellDuke · 2023-12-28 00:02 I use OpenMediaVault and just run docker containers, although I do tinker around a fair bit (it's just Debian on the backend anyway) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- unforgivencode · 2023-12-28 00:13 This made me laugh. I can tell you have bren through the wars and Im sure I will share a similar journey 🤣 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- adamshand · 2023-12-28 04:41 My favourite at the moment is CapRover. Just a simple layer on top of Docker Swarm, does all the reverse proxying and certificate management for you. Quite of few one-click-apps already built (and easy to adapt compose files). Can also deploy your own code Heroku / PaaS style. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mjh2901 · 2023-12-28 06:03 Proxmox running on the metal, LXC Containers hosting docker, a couple VMs running things that are basically their own OS (HA, 3CX etc..) You can run Pimox on a Pi 5 8gb and run 3 to 5 lxc containers, so you can do a lot with minimal hardware. The most important thing in hardware is RAM, everything I have worked with over the years winds up running out of usable ram before it runs out of processing power. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mrtj818 · 2023-12-28 09:11 I run unraid os. It servers all my needs from docker containers, VMs, and it's also my gaming rig ( with some small short comings). I run a steam headless docker which I love, because it makes gaming on my steam deck so much better. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- budius333 · 2023-12-28 20:33 Install Ubuntu server and Docker. Run Portainer and then run everything in docker via compose managing everything on their web-UI
