Selfhosted Streaming app reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ASoftchair · 2023-12-27 08:28 Hi all In the past iv been using discord to be able to stream movies to me and my friends all at once who are scattered across the states, but i dont really want to keep paying for nitro for the better image quality since i have hardware that can most likely stream it myself. Are there any applications that can support this use case? Iv tried MovieNight but was unable to get it to work with Nginx proxy manager, i got owncast to work, but there is a significant delay on it. Anything else you guys suggest? Thanks in advance Edit: thought I mentioned it but I guess I didn’t, the goal is to all watch it together at one time ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Burkely31 · 2023-12-27 08:37 why not just use plex? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ASoftchair · 2023-12-27 08:47 Iv thought about setting up plex/jellyfin, but im not sure that fits the use case here. We all watch the show together at the same time so we can talk about it as it goes, so more so looking for something live? Iv tried searching the internet a bit but i guess i just don’t have the right search terms ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ZolfeYT · 2023-12-27 09:02 Idk if this is allowed here but I assume it’s not discord so it should be, BetterDiscord is what you’re looking for tbh, there are plugins to get Nitro features without nitro including higher quality screen shares. Alternatively your camera is always shown in its quality so you could OBS virtual camera your stream and then also stream for just audio if the quality is the only issue but this may lead to delays. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LastElf · 2023-12-27 09:07 Plex has a watch together option so it pauses/tracks the same for everyone. But I don't think it's a Pass feature so should be fine. I restream via Discord still because I don't have the upload bandwidth to support everyone at once. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- numblock699 · 2023-12-27 09:35 Owncast ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jkirkcaldy · 2023-12-27 10:16 Jellyfin does too. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tkrengel · 2023-12-27 10:57 Jellyfin can stream video and is easy to set up ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Kaleodis · 2023-12-27 15:06 Jellyfin does exactly what you want. In the app, there's the watch party function, it syncs everyones progress and pauses/unpauses in sync. And it's free! Be aware that you will need decent upload speeds though (for ALL selfhosted media players) since you need to be able to stream to multiple peers at the same time. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Minimum-Mix2410 · 2023-12-27 21:32 I second Owncast. Just stream to it using OBS studio from either Jellyfin or Plex. I've used it to stream video games with friends before and it works great. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ASoftchair · 2023-12-27 21:47 Yeah that sounds like it’s the best, only problem is it has like a five second delay. Any settings I should pay attention to to wind em down? Or am I just stuck with that ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Minimum-Mix2410 · 2023-12-27 22:04 I think no matter what you do there will be a delay. If you wanted to watch it at the same time as them, just watch the owncast stream along with them. You should be able to full screen it.
