Simple tool / app to execute scripts on server? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LtBoner · 2023-12-26 19:56 I have a variety of bash scripts on my Ubuntu server. I’d like to be able to execute these on-demand from any device, via something like a simple web app I can connect to over my VPN. The simpler to set up and use, the better. Anyone know of good options for this? Thank you! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ChrisMillerBooklo · 2023-12-26 20:11 https://github.com/OliveTin/OliveTin OliveTin gives safe and simple access to predefined shell commands from a web interface. Works great. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- osuhickeys · 2023-12-26 20:17 This is the way ---------------------------------------------------------------------- eddyizm · 2023-12-26 20:18 Curious what you find because I had just started going down the build if building my own front end for this very same purpose. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- adamshand · 2023-12-26 21:37 oooh, it has an api ... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DropkickFish · 2023-12-26 22:04 Someone's already suggested Olive Tin, but you might also be interested in Script Server https://github.com/bugy/script-server ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LawfulMuffin · 2023-12-26 22:47 Airflow can do it but it’s arguably not on the easy side unless you know python. I use it for this all the time but I’m a programmer ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Verolee · 2023-12-26 22:56 Holy smokes.. I’ve been dreaming about something like this. Thank you❤️ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DropkickFish · 2023-12-26 23:09 You're welcome, pretty sure I had the exact same reaction when I found it! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Verolee · 2023-12-26 23:14 ❤️ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- aceberg_ · 2023-12-27 06:47 If you are using telegram, this bot can execute commands from telegram chat with 1 click https://github.com/aceberg/LinuxExecBot ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheQuantumPhysicist · 2023-12-27 07:54 This is probably an unpopular opinion, but this sounds like playing with fire. You're circumventing the security of your server. Isn't it safer to authenticate with SSH and run the script? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thomasmoors · 2023-12-27 07:56 Maybe a little low level, but https://laravel.com/docs/10.x/processes gives you a lot of freedom to connect the bash scripts to whatever you want. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MiakiCho · 2023-12-27 08:12 [Ansible semaphore](https://github.com/ansible-semaphore/semaphore), if you want to write your scripts as ansible playbooks. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mrXmuzzz · 2023-12-27 08:12 Jenkins ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hidapun · 2023-12-27 09:18 Rundeck community edition. It has a great ui with in built authentication. You can utilise it to run scripts on different servers as well ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tenekev · 2023-12-27 10:51 Not necessarily. Think about the so-called serverless functions. AWS offers lambda functions but you can host your own. As long as the environment is isolated, your server is just the worker. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tenekev · 2023-12-27 10:54 It's like trying to kill a mosquito with a flamethrower. Possible... but utter overkill for most scripts. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tenekev · 2023-12-27 11:04 I've used both [OliveTin](https://github.com/OliveTin/OliveTin) and [Scrip-Server](https://github.com/bugy/script-server). They are really good, simple solutions but after a while, I found them lacking. I find myself running a variety of scripts in different languages and it was hard to maintain lots of environments. That's why I moved to CI/CD pipelines. Drone/Woodpecker and Gitea/Github Actions. In laymen terms, you define a pipeline that creates a necessary environment on the spot - for bash, python, go, js, whatever. Then executes the code. With proper caching, you can minimize redownloading of dependencies. It's a bit more complicated that a single service but it's a lot less work in the long run, especially when you need to migrate everything to a more sophisticated system. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GoTeamScotch · 2023-12-27 11:25 Ooh, gonna check that out too. Thx ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mr-Inkognito · 2023-12-27 11:28 Maybe KDE connect with [run command](https://userbase.kde.org/KDE_Conn ect/Tutorials/Adding_commands) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Akura_Awesome · 2023-12-27 16:28 You could just use Ansible playbooks that execute the scripts on your servers. This is likely the most secure way to do it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheCudder · 2023-12-27 21:20 Anything similar for PowerShell & Windows?
