Proxmox Cloud and Openmedia Vault reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- defekT1312 · 2023-12-26 15:01 I'm about to configure my first Server and currently I'm Lost in tutorials, I'm trying nor for hours without any great solution. I installed Proxmox, a VM for OpenMediaVault and a Container for Nextcloud. I want to Use OMV as a NAS for local Storage and Nextcloud for external acces. I don't know if this is even right but that was the Idea. There are 2 HDD which I want to use as a RAID but then the Problems begin. Shall I do a ZFS Pool via Proxmox or shall I Passthrough the HDD to the VM and let OMV do the Raid? How can I connect Nextcloud to the Pool then? If I do ZFS is it enough to Passthrough one HDD and Proxmox will do the Mirroring? I'm really lost rn ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nik_h_75 · 2023-12-26 15:11 I recommend you pass through the HDDs to the OMV VM. In OMV you setup your raid for the 2 HDDs and then share (setup NFS). In your Nextcloud VM you mount the nfs share. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- defekT1312 · 2023-12-26 15:14 Ok can configure that permanently in /etc/fstab I guess. What about the Proxmox ZFS Pool then? Delete? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nik_h_75 · 2023-12-26 16:09 Yes, the mount is defined in fstab (the nfs share can be created in omv - just be sure you do the correct variables). When you pass through the disks they are "invisible" to proxmox host - so yes, the ZFS pool is not relevant / should be deleted prior to passing through the HDDs. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MaxxFlowDE · 2023-12-26 16:18 Depends on other assumptions, too! You can do this with no clue. And for performance, it might be the best! When thinking about backup, I would go for strage management at host (eg zfs) and use virtual disks in vm as normal (use virtio as virtual disk type for best performance). This way you can backup the full vm content to a Nas or when you like differential backup (space usage) backup to a PBS. You do not need to care about individual backup strategy. Just backup the vm including everything. For nextcloud, I would recommend: try running NC on docker inside omv. You just need to install the docker compose plugin in omv and can start. This way you can put all available space to one vm and you don't have to guess for which vm (omv or NC) you need which disk capacity in a year or two. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CoLuxey · 2023-12-26 16:33 I did exactly what you want. I bought an HBA card and use this in the OMV VM via a hardware device passthrough. Then I installed the ZFS plugin in OMV. Nextcloud is running independent in another VM on proxmox. I prefer this way because you have access to your data from every system that can work with ZFS. With virtual in proxmox as a NAS its getting much more complicated when you need to recover data.
