One-user cloud storage (and more?): advice on what and where to host reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- monkeykombat808 · 2023-12-26 05:03 Hello, I am privacy/free software oriented person who has his data scattered on devices (laptop, external drives, phone) in inconsistent and unsynced state. I am looking for a saner setup. Features I'd like: * not hosted in my home * a big-tech-like muggle user experience (that's a general direction where to aim, not a requirement) * reference data on a cloud storage, partially replicated and synced across devices on demand * possibility to mount the cloud storage on local devices (so no syncthing) for this hybrid remote/partially replicated experience * nice android integration (e.g. the Nextcloud client) * optional: sharing data occasionally with a public/password protected link * optional: end to end encryption if that exists and is stable (I heard Nextcloud can do it but it is glitchy) * optional: multimedia library (with e.g. Jellyfin or the like?) stored online and accessible on my devices * optional: backups (although I could consider that keeping local copies of critical data in sync with the reference data stored in the cloud to be enough) * easy administration (YUnohost and the like??): I am technically able to do it but I have reached that stage in a geek like where tinkering and maintaining is no longer that fun. The less I need to think about it and spend time on it the better. Automated updates with notifications in case of failure would be great. I don't see any other thing to self host at the moment but that could change in the future. I'd say I need 0.5TB for actual critical personal data I want safe and replicated and accessible (e.g. documents, photos, various archives), and then more (1TB-2TB) would be bonus for a multimedia library. For now everything fits on two 1TB USB drives on an ARM board at home and I sshfs there when needed which is not great nor reliable. Questions: * What to host? * I know about nextcloud but it has always looked a bit overkill to me. I would be the only user and would favor lighter one-user oriented things. I am open to alternatives. * Not just cloud storage oriented: what is your opinion about things like YUnoHost? If I could avoid sysadmin stress that would be great. * Where to host? * I own a domain name at OVH and they have dedicated servers (their "kimsufi" offers) with 2TB for like €10 a month but I wonder if a dedicated server is overkill? Would a VPS be wiser? * Any suggestions? I really don't know a lot. Not self hosting and going for an existing and trustworthy nextcloud provider could also be an option if it turns out to be the best. I am really open to any suggestion or comment. Any other approach that fits the needs is good. Thank you for your help ---------------------------------------------------------------------- quinyd · 2023-12-26 07:53 Sounds like you need Seafile or Nextcloud. Both fulfills all your requirements. Either host it at a provider or get a raspberry pi + external hdd and host it at a family member’s place (since one of your requirements is to not host it at home). I have Seafile on a Pi at my parents place and it’s been running for 5 years without issues.
