Home Server OS with Atomic Updates and Docker support reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ap0them · 2023-12-25 01:14 I'm trying to pick an OS for a home server I have running Nextcloud, Adguard Home and eventually the \*arr software with Jellyfin. I've looked at OSs like proxmox and trueNAS but I don't think I really need that GUI and security-wise I prefer containerized applications and a non-debian base. I was looking at Fedora IoT but it doesn't use docker which most apps have official support for. I've also checked out Fedora Core but the ignition file system seems like a headache. Should I cut my losses and stick to a NAS specific OS or is there any benefit to a more general purpose immutable server OS? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- z-lf · 2023-12-25 02:41 Coreos or flatcar. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Spider-One · 2023-12-25 03:19 You can install Docker on Fedora IoT. I am currently using IoT with Podman and it works well. Once you understand a few concepts for permissions Podman works well. Quadlets and auto-update are solid. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- horus-heresy · 2023-12-25 04:29 Consider unraid ---------------------------------------------------------------------- alanshore222 · 2023-12-25 04:40 Proxmox :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Squanchy2112 · 2023-12-25 06:13 Unraid ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ANDROID_16 · 2023-12-25 06:24 OpenSUSE MicroOS. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Hulxmash · 2023-12-25 07:05 I'm not sure I understand the desire to avoid debian but Rocky and Alma linux are great red hat based OS's. Both support docker. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- housepanther2000 · 2023-12-25 08:31 As soon as my server arrives, it's getting Proxmox installed on it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- xantioss · 2023-12-25 08:57 In tbh also kinda curious what’s the reasoning on not using Debian. If anything, my entire industry is running on Debian based distros (and alpine) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ikbosh · 2023-12-25 11:22 Iirc Flatcar is the type of OS you're after, otherwise K3OS or BalenaOS might meet the criteria too. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- User5281 · 2023-12-25 14:31 I’ve been down this road a few times and wind up back with Debian every time. Fedora coreos is probably what you want but I can’t be bothered to spend time learning the ignition process and the differences between docker and podman for a single machine when Debian is as easy as installing docker and copying some config files. RancherOS was the answer but was discontinued. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- notdoreen · 2023-12-25 15:09 Look into CasaOS. It's relatively easy for non technical folks and has a nice looking ui ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Hulxmash · 2023-12-25 16:31 But has a debian base. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ap0them · 2023-12-25 18:20 As a project I have nothing against Debian but I don’t like the frozen release style distros. Security patches aren’t always backported. I prefer more up to date distributions. Also it’s not immutable, which is also nice for security. No hate to Debian though, Linux wouldn’t be what it is today without it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ap0them · 2023-12-25 18:21 Is ignition very hard? It kinda looked like a headache but I haven’t looked into it much. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ap0them · 2023-12-25 18:22 I like podman more and I’ve used it with Fedora and Fedora Silverblue but it doesn’t have as many official images and guides and that’s kind of a worry for me. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- z-lf · 2023-12-25 18:24 I don't think you'd want to use images that are not working with podman tbh. They should work 99% by just pulling from dockerhub/ghrc/... from podman. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- z-lf · 2023-12-25 18:29 Not really. It's like everything. K8s is easy once you get it. It looks daunting before that. Give it a try. It's worth it. After that, check k8s. You'll thank me. Ps: Don't be afraid of podman if Fedora IOT works for you. 99% cases it will work with the docker image / docker compose. You just run it the same. There are some caveats if if want to play with file ownership but that's not on the image, that's on your compose file. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ap0them · 2023-12-25 18:31 That does look pretty good, I’ve never used OpenSUSE so that would be fun ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ap0them · 2023-12-25 18:34 I didn’t know podman worked as a drop in replacement for docker, I do prefer it though to docker. Thanks ---------------------------------------------------------------------- z-lf · 2023-12-25 18:35 It does. Even docker compose works. File ownership will be pulling your hair a bit maybe but that's all. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ap0them · 2023-12-25 18:47 I’ll give Fedora IoT a try then, thanks ---------------------------------------------------------------------- johnerp · 2023-12-26 03:01 I know unraid is being down voted likely due to a ‘small’ fee, but in the end it really is worth it, you then get to spend your time on the fun docker content vs keeping the lights on. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- horus-heresy · 2023-12-26 03:16 Self hosted goes thru waves of tribal stupidity. back in 2017 when I started dabbling with unraid it was all the hype and freenas. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- johnerp · 2023-12-26 08:05 Yes, and technically one could argue paid for, but ‘self-hosted’ software is still ‘self-hosted’, so I’m bemused as to why it would be down voted so much.
