My local (self hosted) satisfactory game server has weird issues but the CPU and RAM have much headroom. To my issues within the game. I get teleported to a spot i was a minute ago and then it freezes. No items in my storage containers load. i am using a large save file of mine with 250h is to test reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lifemal · 2023-12-24 20:10 What are the hardware specs? Large/complex gamefiles like that can benefit greatly from fast clock speeds, fast memory and fast disk. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Alabama_boy3478 · 2023-12-24 20:25 i5-6600, 2x16gb 3200Mhz and 1x 8gb 2000 and smt Ram. I use both cause my CPU can't support more than 2133Mhz with both are well over, so i might as well take the extra 8gb. I boot from a sata ssd and are using 2x 1tb hdds in Mirrow config for the docker container. Also I am running this on my true nas Scale server as a app. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lifemal · 2023-12-24 21:13 A lot to dissect here. The RAM won't run in dual channel with 3 dimms most likely (not sure of motherboard) but in most cases 2 DIMMs is going to be faster and more efficient than 3, even if capacity is higher. The CPU should be fast enough, but it's possible the platter drives are causing some speed issues, especially if this server is being used for other things. I'd look at using SSDs for gameservers where possible. NVMe is even better than a SATA SSD. I don't think there should be any issues with running this on a truenas box as a container, but I haven't run that configuration myself. My suggestions would be to get the 8GB stick of RAM removed -- boot to BIOS and make sure your RAM is running at 2133Mhz. Doesn't hurt to update BIOS to most recent for any performance improvements they found along the way. Move the gameserver to an SSD, the seek times on the spinning rust drives is probably slowing things down. This would be compounded by other things also acessing those disks, such as a Plex/Jellyfin server, SMB/NFS shares and such. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cd109876 · 2023-12-25 04:22 my guess is that the server is single threaded and its maxing out 1 core - which shows as 25% usage because there's 4 cores - and then slowing down. use like htop or something, it will give you a better view of CPU usage. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- arriej · 2023-12-25 08:52 Ive had a similar issues running my satisfactory server on a machine with 4 10k SAS drives. Whenever the server autosaved the was a massive lagspike. which became worse and worse the bigger the save got. If you have a look at the logs it will tell you how long the save took to save the game. it will look like: >\[2023.12.24-20.56.50:024\]\[815\]LogGame: World Serialization (save): 0.129 seconds \[2023.12.24-20.56.50:137\]\[815\]LogGame: Compression: 0.110 seconds > >\[2023.12.24-20.56.50:137\]\[815\]LogGame: Write To Disk: 0.001 seconds > >\[2023.12.24-20.56.50:137\]\[815\]LogGame: Write Backup to Disk and Cleanup time: 0.001 seconds On the HDD Write To Disk took over 10 seconds. I started a new save, so time will have to tell if that was our issue. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- blaktronium · 2023-12-25 17:55 Just a note, if you have 3 8gb dimms in a dual channel system you will get dual channel bandwidth on the first 16gb of ram and single channel on the last 8. It doesn't break dual channel memory to run 3 dimms. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lifemal · 2023-12-25 18:52 Interesting, that's the first I've heard of this! Do you have some documentation/anything I can read a bit more? I'd be really curious to know about how things work with the system allocating to the different speeds and what that could do for performance. If an application got allocated to both single and dual channel at the same if that could/would cause any quirkiness. My understanding was generally memory in a system will all operate at the same speed and underclock faster dimms to the slowest dimm in the slots. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- blaktronium · 2023-12-25 18:53 Right but channels are physical. You can't possibly have 3 dimms connected to the same channel. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kmisterk · 2023-12-25 23:18 ## Post Removed Hey, Alabama_boy3478!
