is there a More stable nextcloud alternative? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mensch88 · 2023-12-24 18:46 Hello, im using nextcloud for a few years now and featurewise its great but its not very stable and errorprone, when i look in my logs insee errors and warning wich is not good, i dont even use most features so my question is: is there a rock solid stable and well tested solution for critical data? i mean it must not happen that it screws itself up and nextcloud isnt optimal... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ich_hab_deine_Nase · 2023-12-24 18:51 I don't understand your issues. I have been running multiple Nextcloud instances for years, some of them serve up to 500 simultaneous users. It’s very stable and you definitely should not see any critical errors unless you’re doing something wrong. I suggest looking into the root cause of those errors. My nextcloud instances have all been running for years without a hitch. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Anycast · 2023-12-24 19:27 Do you need all of the bells and whistles that nextcloud offers? I did have a hard time getting it performing well, but stability was fine. As for alternatives, it really depends on which features you require. But if you're willing to spend some money, FileRun might be worth investigating? I tried FileRun and liked everything about it, except I found it less reliable with the NextCloud client sync (which was the main thing I required). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Cl4whammer · 2023-12-24 19:51 Install it from snap, i know people like to hate snaps. But the nextcloud package is awesome. You get auto updates, no web or php config, no mysql server to work with and no need for docker. I use it since a year and i never had to do anything, it just runs. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- illegalsmolcat · 2023-12-24 19:56 What errors do you see? What warnings? Seeing things on the logs doesn't necessarily mean something is wrong or the software is unstable. More context! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mensch88 · 2023-12-24 19:58 until Yesterday i ran nextcloud 25 for a long while for me and a few other people ~10 users and it was mostly fine. I had a few Problems especially with the clients and synchronisation, it just wasnt working properly, files stopped syncing on mobile and the Desktop client froze very often, a common problem among nextcloud users, in the cloud on the web, office isnt working properly, (or i didnt set it up properly) so i shut it down a long time ago but thats not that important so i didnt care, the cloud was Mostly working so i left it as is, nc25 is end of life this year so i decided a few days ago to upgrade to the newest nc28 to take advantage of the newest features. I started with the all in one docker version and it was quite hard to get it going so i used the Community Version on the dockerhub instead, and this version is a Nightmare, it not really maintained, even the setup doesnt work, the buttons to select the database type dont even work and it just ignores the environment variables, you can find a lot of other instances via shodan where the owners also gave up before setup 😄 yea, docker repo also full of issues with the same problem, so i dumped that and went back to the official AIO image. that one is a lot better, but also not without issues, i have a bunch of servers wich makes it crucial to use http proxies like nginx proxy manager but nc seems to demand a port 80 so i had to follow the more sketchy looking documentation from someone else linked on the page. this works, but not really well, i had to disable the domaincheck for example, now it spams the logs with the same errors over and over and almost every page takes like 45 seconds to load (if you know a solution for that please let me know, im working now three days on the upgrade 🥲) im not sure what you are doing better than me, but for me it looks like either the nextcloud Software is incomplete or the documentation is. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- KN4MKB · 2023-12-24 20:10 I see this every once in a while and have no idea why people have so much trouble. I've had a nextcloud instance for 3 years with auto updates on weekends. I have AI photo categories and all. I've had one update fail, and I had to update via the command line in all of three years. Nextcloud is stable. If you experienced a bug, report it. You need to take a look at your install and maintenance process because you don't have something right if you have that many issues. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- habskilla · 2023-12-24 20:13 You may want to look a Filecloud CE ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ro55mo · 2023-12-24 20:18 Sounds like you should consider the Enterprise license / support. Just moved my install to a new server, although it is just a docker install, it runs behind nginx as a proxy as well. Most of the problems I had (as everytime I do something like this) is file size. So make sure, that all file and memory limits are set correctly, for the server running the nextcloud stuff and your proxy. Try to bypass the proxy as much as possible. Nginx has a few settings that are mentioned in the nextcloud documentation. I don't see any problems with nextcloud behind a proxy regardless on which port nextcloud itself is running. Just make sure your proxy and your nextcloud are setup correctly. If you point mystorage.at.home domain to your proxy and tell it to foward this to your nextcloud instance, but the nextcloud instance is running as (i.e.) "localhost" that will not work properly. Nextcloud needs to know, that you are accessing it as mystorage.at.home although the hostname does not point to the nextcloud ip. As I mentioned I do use the docker version (for years now), it is well maintaned, easy to install and easy to upgrade between version, I use it behind a docker nginx proxy setup with letsencrypt and all my other home services and it runs fine. You should checkout the github directory for the nextcloud docker stuff and there example directories. Maybe restart here if you have not done so already: [https://github.com/nextcloud/docker/tree/master/.examples/docker- compose/with-nginx-proxy](https://github.com/nextcloud/docker/tree/mas ter/.examples/docker-compose/with-nginx-proxy) I did setup letsencrypt and the proxy differently, but can heartly recommend the nginxproxy docker images. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ecyoph · 2023-12-24 20:55 Nextcloud can mean very different things for different people depending on how it's set up, which version is run and which apps are installed. I can be very complicated to get the setup exactly right and it's not an easy to use single executable server app or something. If done right nextcloud is awesome, but is it the right fit for you? If you don't need most of the features there's easier alternatives that are more stable to run as a hobbyist (because you can't really messup the configuration). Maybe seafile or filestash would be a better alternative for you. Or you find a nextcloud vendor which provides a easy to use and well maintained nextcloud distribution. Someone suggested using the snap package which sounds like a solid option if you want something that just works (even if you're not a fan of snaps in general). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ProKn1fe · 2023-12-24 20:55 There is literally nothing by functionality compared to nextcloud. I feel like I’ve finally found something I’m not looking beyond. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ecyoph · 2023-12-24 21:43 Well, I totally understand why people are having troubles. There's so much more to setting up nextcloud than just nextcloud: vps setup, dns setup, ssl setup, php config, php modules, installing dependencies, reverse proxy, maybe docker, sql server, memcached, redis, nextcloud settings, maybe smtp server, installing apps, installing app dependencies, maintenance, auto updates, backups, ... Then there's lots of different ways to install nextcloud, even if you only count the official ones. Then there's lots of options to choose from for each of those different installation paths. I don't think it's helpful to say "I don't get why anyone is having troubles, I'm running nextcloud for years and never had any problems". I think its most important to determine how experienced the user is, how much time they are willing to spend and what their needs are. For many inexperienced users that just need file syncing it's probably not a good idea to sell them on nextcloud and shame them for having troubles setting it up. I'm all for nextcloud if people understand what they are getting in to but it's certainly not the be-all and end- all solution for everyone and everything. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mensch88 · 2023-12-24 21:50 well its not that i have no idea what im doing, im using docker php mysql nginx etc. for my own apps but im just Not sure how to interpret the nextcloud documentations fine details, it looks like im doing something wrong but cant figure out what, i tried to follow the documentation as close as possible but i have to puzzle my information together from a bunch of different readmes and discussions to find a way that works (didnt find a good way yet :) ) i mean they have documentation how to set it up and even how to set it up with reverse proxy but it just dont wants to work ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mensch88 · 2023-12-24 21:52 i wrote an issue where i have detailed information, maybe you can help me, would really apprechiate it https://github.com/nextcloud/all-in-one/issues/3964 was way easier back when nextcloudpi was still a thing ;( ---------------------------------------------------------------------- illegalsmolcat · 2023-12-24 21:56 Noice. What I'd hazard to say is that the issues are Nextcloud is designed as an enterprise app. As such, it has the requirements of maintaining an enterprise app. If you don't meet those, you're gonna have issues. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mensch88 · 2023-12-24 22:02 thank you 👍 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Tresillo_Crack · 2023-12-24 22:04 If you only need files and nothing else then own cloud or a network share ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ecyoph · 2023-12-24 22:14 A lot. There are powerful and fun apps that are no dependency single file binaries which can be copied to the server and executed and just work. I've hosted lots of stuff over the years and nextcloud was the most painful to setup and maintain except for maybe outline (knowledge base not vpn). You're correct that nextcloud is designed as an enterprise app and I don't fault it for its complexity because it's somewhat necessary. But it's still important to acknowledge that it is complex and might not be the best fit for everybody. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kondorb · 2023-12-24 22:16 Don’t look into logs. Every single piece of software in the world is spamming logs with warnings 24/7. If features you use are working - enjoy. If not - investigate and fix. Only if 10% of them are valid bugs, that's still over 200. It is completely possible that the user set it up wrong as well, since there are a lot of factors to consider than things to tweak. I myself suffered metadata loss because of a confirmed nextcloud bug. So I guess some people are just more lucky than others. :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ecyoph · 2023-12-24 22:32 Yes, but I'd argue that it's not their fault. Nextcloud is recommended too readily and there's probably not enough words of caution and warnings about it being complex to set up. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nerdyviking88 · 2023-12-24 22:33 I'd disagree there. No. Sorry to hear that you lost data, always follow 3-2-1 backup guidelines. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lipton_tea · 2023-12-24 23:52 I think people need some linux admin experience to run… it isn’t a go binary you can just upgrade and restart and be fine. That said… my Nextcloud install was an Owncloud install before Nextcloud existed. I had been running that owncloud instance for a few years by then and upgraded to the nextcloud fork. I then converted the VM instance to run the nextcloud docker server a few years ago. It’s been hosting my family and friends files for at least 8 years now. There was a time where syncing was shit but I think that’s mostly resolved now that the client sends data in chunks. As the primary complaint was that Nextcloud has a large amount of dependencies, requirements, external services, etc. I have no problem implementing things as a single binary. But I'm more familiar with keeping them separate from the app's main binary, so that you can scale each dependency independently to work on the actual traffic needs of the app under load. I think we've gone a bit beyond the initial discussion though. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Squanchy2112 · 2023-12-25 01:07 Damn that's solid ---------------------------------------------------------------------- antek2220 · 2023-12-25 03:07 Maybe you should troubleshoot the problem in your logs. My reasoning: * I have no interest in hosting email. All email providers I’d consider have calendaring. * I prefer self hosted variants vs NextCloud’s apps ecosystem. The dedicated self hosted ones tend to be more polished - eg Immich. So I run Syncthing and File Browser as my uid/guid TrueNAS user. I mount $HOME as /Home, media as /Media, and Immich photos for my user via /Photos. Syncthing’s Sync folder is in $HOME and that is exported via a users homes SMB share so when I access via my laptop or PC it’s all there.
