What's your favorite Minecraft server platform? Paper, forge, something else? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Desperate-Candle-724 · 2023-12-24 17:19 Looking for what platform you all like and why for a Minecraft server. I'm using Windows 11 and not sure which to use. Leaning towards paper. My son would like the one block mod. I'm looking for ease of use but happy to listen to any suggestions. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Weetile · 2023-12-24 17:26 To clarify you mean OneBlock Original or OneBlock Plus? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Noname8899555 · 2023-12-24 17:28 Fabric, it keeps the most vanilla feel, does not vreak any redstone or game mechanics by default. Fabric with sofium, lithium, etc. That is. And if properly used it makes it run better than paper. I have been hosting a server with fabric and optimization mods for 4 years now, and it is very nice. Since a couple months i run it in a docker container based on the repo by itzg/mc-server and it is great, scheduled world backups, puts the server to sleep when no plsyer is online to save electricity and i can uodate by just editing my docker compose yaml. Highly reccommend. If you run it on a headless linux server it even runs for 1 player or 2-3 in the same already generated area on a raspberry pi 4B 8gb. With this merry Christmas ---------------------------------------------------------------------- xemulator · 2023-12-24 17:35 Purpur is good for performance and customizability. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Desperate-Candle-724 · 2023-12-24 17:38 I have no idea. Portainer perhaps? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bucksnort2 · 2023-12-24 17:49 You can run a Minecraft server in Docker. You would download the fabric.jar file and launch it the same way you would a completely vanilla Minecraft server. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Senkyou · 2023-12-24 17:52 Podman is good on Windows. Haven't tried Portainer. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Linux-Human · 2023-12-24 18:00 Honestly it doesn't matter much. Since minecraft isnt really resource heavy. I generally use paper. But if you're wanting mods you should either use forge or fabric since those are modloaders. The person who asked if you wanted OneBlock Original or OneBlock Plus had a valid question since Original is just a map and Plus is a forge mod. I guess you probably want OneBlock Plus since it's configured for multi-player and in that case forge will work for you but paper and fabric won't. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Noname8899555 · 2023-12-24 18:01 Here my anonymized docker compose yaml. And frankly our mspt was half that pf paper, and when adding force loaded chunks or mspt during 2 player elytra flying through new chunks, or looking at our industrial area. Each time our fabric setup won. However we could not use every setting on paper since preserving redstone behaviour was the priority goal. Sooooo thats a caveat. Secondly, many farms don't work even if they are chunk loaded and players aren't nearby (e.g. raid farms, tree farms, hostile mob farms, etc.). Therefore whenever they're operating, there's a player online. And when the server is empty, they're not operating. Thirdly, if you're hosting for friends, enforce that farms that don't require player presence have an off switch. If people refuse to follow this rule, don't let them on the server. For large, public servers where this isn't feasible; you weren't going to save CPU time by putting the server to sleep when it's empty because it will almost never be empty. Fourthly, in most cases, the CPU running doesn't really cost you anything. Minecraft, being single-threaded, is not likely to draw more than like 100W. Even that's really pushing it. Over a month that's like $15 if you're paying $0.20/kWh. That's a really high electricity rate in the U.S. and Canada, and afaik pretty normal in Europe. And $15 a month for a private server isn't a lot. Realms is $10 and complete ass in comparison to self-hosted. You could pay for a managed server or dedicated CPU from a cloud provider for about the same price (probably more to get dedicated CPU and decent RAM; for example, dedicated CPU w/ 4GB RAM is $36/mo from Linode; $72 for 8GB), but you get billed a flat rate monthly, not per CPU cycle or something like that. Putting the server to sleep is just a waste of time and money at that point. So the only scenario I see where you could possibly need the server to sleep is if it's running on your main game machine, but at that point just open to LAN and port forward/VPN/SSH Tunnel/Hamachi, since at least if you do that you have control over when the server is monopolizing CPU time. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Morgennebel · 2023-12-25 10:37 Well, I am lucky to pay only 0.399€/kWh (=0.44 Freedom Units / kWh) while neighbours pay up to 0.59€/kWh (0.65 Freedom Units / kWh). Location is Germany. My entire homelab is based on power efficiency and I am consuming 48W in production for 40Ghz CPU (sum) and 128 GB (sum) including firewall, switches and disks. Minecraft has 8GB RAM assigned but power increases by 25% to 60W if the server and the farms are active. I am not willing to pay that for virtual items and lazy kids. Farms are awesome but there is no need for thousands of gold, diamonds and whatsoever. Let the server sleep when they are offline, farms can work when they play, everything is fine. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Trick_Algae5810 · 2023-12-25 14:56 Sponge server for forge. Cuberite is also very good if you just want a vanilla minecraft server its written in C/C++ so doesn't use a ton of RAM and works quite well on low power devices just as rasperry pi's. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BlackHatMagic1545 · 2023-12-25 17:18 That doesn't really change what I said. Yeah, power's expensive, but by your own admission it's only a difference of 12W *when the farms are active*. That's like €3 a month at your rate. And an idle server, with no one online, doesn't use as much power as one with players online since the farms don't run without players. You're saving like one euro per month, if that. That's fine if you think it's worth it, but I'm just pointing it out. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Trick_Algae5810 · 2023-12-26 00:53 I wouldn’t try it without a backup first, but I don’t see why it wouldn’t work.
