Jellyfin on Samsung (Tizen) TV reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- S7ewie · 2023-12-24 07:50 I recently got my home server set up and chose to use Jellyfin for media streaming. I don't regret this decision at all, so far it's been great but we just got a new 4K HDR TV and the lack of a JellyFin app for it might be a deal-breaker. I realise there are ways of getting the app onto the TV but so far I'm having little luck getting this to work. I also realise you can just get an Amazon FireTV or similar media streaming device and use that instead but I already have a smart TV with all the apps I need (except JellyFin) so I don't want to pay for a media device that just adds JellyFin. To add to that, Plex is supported, so that option is free. Does anyone have a simple method for getting the JellyFin app onto a Tizen TV? Or able to help me with the errors im getting? Alternatively is Plex worth the switch? Do I need plexpass? Am I right in understanding that using your own hardware to transcode media is behind the pass? I originally chose JellyFin for music streaming, is Plex as good in that area? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- adrianitc · 2023-12-24 08:02 Simple? No. Doable? Yes. https://github.com/jellyfin/jellyfin-tizen ---------------------------------------------------------------------- S7ewie · 2023-12-24 08:05 I've been trying to use the docker container version but I keep getting a connection error: Attempting to connect to Samsung TV at IP address 192.168.20.10 * Server is not running. Start it now on port 26099 * * Server has started successfully * connecting to 192.168.20.10:26101 ... failed to connect to 192.168.20.10:26101 Attempting to get the TV name... No experience with this one. I used the how to in the official jellyfin repo from above. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- aeahmg · 2023-12-24 08:17 I had the same issue, ended up exec-ing into bash on the container and doibg the steps manually anyways. I think the issue was in the adb connect, I could see the errors better when running it manually. Iirc, what fixed it for me is that I needed to enter my laptop IP into the developer options on the TV, and also make sure to reboot (long press on power button) after enabling dev mode ---------------------------------------------------------------------- amcco1 · 2023-12-24 08:17 This is the guide that I followed. https://github.com/jeppevinkel/jellyfin-tizen-builds ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mrkesu · 2023-12-24 08:18 They are working on getting it to the app store, it's going slowly but I'm patiently waiting for that instead of doing my own builds :) https://github.com/jellyfin/jellyfin-tizen/issues/222 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- i_reddit_it · 2023-12-24 09:40 I set mine up using this about a week ago and I initially had the same error message also. What worked for me in the end was to ensure you enter the correct IP address of the *host* computer when enabling developer mode on the TV. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- arcadianarcadian · 2023-12-24 10:59 I have a Samsung TV, model AU7199 (2021), and I installed a Jellyfin client via docker by following the document below. [https://github.com/Georift/install-jellyfin- tizen](https://github.com/Georift/install-jellyfin-tizen) \- your docker host should be in the same network as the TV \- go to developer mode on TV (I had to install the SmartThings app on my Android phone which connected to the same network as the TV to press 12345, pressing remote numbers didn't work) (I had to unplug/plug after the process.) \- turn on the TV, and go to apps. The Apps screen should say APPS (DEVELOP MODE) \- on your docker host run the docker container to connect and install the client. docker run --rm georift/install-jellyfin-tizen docker run --rm georift/install-jellyfin-tizen 192.168.1.10 Attempting to connect to Samsung TV at IP address 192.168.1.10 * Server is not running. There are some steps you have to take. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- S7ewie · 2023-12-24 11:47 Still getting a similar error: `There is no` [`192.168.20.10`](https://192.168.20.10) `target.` Seems like some kind of connection issue even though its connected in Device Manager? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- S7ewie · 2023-12-24 11:48 Is it PC host where you're running the command to install jellyfin app or the server host? I've got mine set up as the PC. According to Tizen Device Manager, its connected? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- S7ewie · 2023-12-24 11:48 That's good to know. Would much prefer them support it officially :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- S7ewie · 2023-12-24 11:51 Thanks, yeah this is exactly what I'm doing. I can't work out which step I'm doing wrong. According to Tizen Device manager, I'm connected to the TV :/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- aeahmg · 2023-12-24 12:03 The host where you are attempting to install the app from, so your pc. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- S7ewie · 2023-12-24 12:12 Yeah so I've got that correct. It's connected in Device manager so I presume I've got that part right? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- aeahmg · 2023-12-24 12:18 If it's connected successfully, the other steps should work correctly from there ---------------------------------------------------------------------- S7ewie · 2023-12-24 12:28 I can't add pics but the connection is ON. If I r-click "permit to install applications" I get "Succeeded to upload a certificate" and if I r-click "Installed web app list" I get a full list of the apps installed on the PC so as far as I can tell the connection should be established? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- arcadianarcadian · 2023-12-24 12:29 logs? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- aeahmg · 2023-12-24 12:34 Never tried from GUI tbh, so can't help here. The installer script should have the sufficient CLI commands though to install everything once adb is connected correctly ---------------------------------------------------------------------- S7ewie · 2023-12-24 12:44 Just realised I needed to put the TV name here, not the IP. Installation worked! App on the TV.. though doesn't seem to walk to play anything but that's a different problem. Thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheQuantumPhysicist · 2023-12-24 12:57 When enabling the Developer Mode on your TV, make sure to input your source IP address (laptop, server, etc, that's on the same network, that's delivering the package). That's all I had to do to fix that connection issue. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thesoak · 2023-12-24 16:54 I also have a Tizen and even if Jellyfin were offered on it, I would still use my Roku. It works SO much better for every single app I've tried. Samsung's system is absolute shit. My advice is to buy a Roku Express, disconnect your TV from the network, and enjoy. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- einmaulwurf · 2023-12-24 17:01 I also used this to install Jellyfin a while back and had problems, although I don't know what exactly anymore. What helped for me was doing a factory reset on the TV. Afterwards it all went through fine. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MyTechAccount90210 · 2023-12-24 18:16 Samsung software is shit. I started hating them back in like 2018 when their plex software releases were so bad and outdated they couldnt deal with SSL forced connections from my plex server. 3rd party box is always the best way to go. Let samsung focus on the TV, let the media play focus on the media. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- S7ewie · 2023-12-24 20:01 Fair. Will take a look at options. I have a Chromecast with google TV for the bedroom TV so might just get another one of those. Need to make sure its 4k though. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- S7ewie · 2023-12-24 20:12 Thanks, you might have me convinced with the Roku. I used to have another Roku device and in all fairness it was a great piece of kit. I just need to be sure its good with 4K HDR media but the Roku Express looks like a good option at a good price too. I thought it would be easier & better to stick to the TVs software but if that's not the case then maybe I'll ditch that all together and just get the Roku Thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- garibaldi3489 · 2023-12-26 04:55 I successfully installed Jellyfin on a Tizen TV a few months ago; is there any value at all in updating the app on the TV now (by re- building it and reinstalling it)? Or if it's basically just loading jellyfin-web, maybe there's no real value in updating the app once it is loaded? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- adrianitc · 2023-12-26 07:03 Cool that you figured it out yourself. I had issues with 4K videos over wifi 6 because of some concrete walls between my TV and the AP. Play a video and check the playback info to see what's happening. Also check the jellyfin logs. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- S7ewie · 2023-12-26 08:13 Where's the playback info? I "think" I've figured it out.. I changed sound in the app settings from "Stereo" to "Direct".. no idea why that fixed it.. but it's not stopping anymore. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- adrianitc · 2023-12-26 08:14 Press the settings wheel in the player and there you have it.
