Better self hosted alternative to WordPress reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Disane87 · 2023-12-23 23:48 There is pretty useful blog software around the corner: Ghost! It's self hosted and pretty neat in functionality (and pretty unbloated). Any self-hosted web server will work. I'd recommend NGINX. For the static site generator itself, I've used Hugo in the past: https://gohugo.io/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sir_dancealot · 2023-12-24 03:07 I currently use Hugo but I want to go with Strapi + NextJS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AvanCox · 2023-12-24 03:13 Have you ever translated a theme into a language other than English? And then done the same with every theme update? It's annoying, especially as good premium themes can cost 80+ euros. Almost everything in the theme is hardcoded and has to be redone with every update. Or that after a Ghost update the theme no longer works 100% because something in Ghost has been completely changed. There was so much hype about Ghost that I switched one of my Wordpress blogs to Ghost. Everything should be better - even SEO. In the end, however, there was only the sober realization that it was just hype. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hainguyenac · 2023-12-24 04:24 I used hugo in the past and I host them on netlify, they just build the file from GitHub and I don't even need to configure a host, and it's free as well. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PowerfulAttorney3780 · 2023-12-24 05:02 !REMINDME 12 HOURS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RemindMeBot · 2023-12-24 05:03 I will be messaging you in 12 hours on [**2023-12-24 17:02:45 UTC**](h ttp://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=2023-12- 24%2017:02:45%20UTC%20To%20Local%20Time) to remind you of [**this link **](https://www.reddit.com/r/selfhosted/comments/18piciv/better_self_h osted_alternative_to_wordpress/kepf9ru/?context=3) [**CLICK THIS LINK**](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose/?to=Remin dMeBot&subject=Reminder&message=%5Bhttps%3A%2F%2Fwww.reddit.com%2Fr%2F selfhosted%2Fcomments%2F18piciv%2Fbetter_self_hosted_alternative_to_wo rdpress%2Fkepf9ru%2F%5D%0A%0ARemindMe%21%202023-12- 24%2017%3A02%3A45%20UTC) to send a PM to also be reminded and to reduce spam. ^(Parent commenter can ) [^(delete this message to hide from others.)] (https://www.reddit.com/message/compose/?to=RemindMeBot&subject=Delete %20Comment&message=Delete%21%2018piciv) ***** |[^(Info)](https://www.reddit.com/r/RemindMeBot/comments/e1bko7/remind mebot_info_v21/)|[^(Custom)](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose/?t o=RemindMeBot&subject=Reminder&message=%5BLink%20or%20message%20inside %20square%20brackets%5D%0A%0ARemindMe%21%20Time%20period%20here)|[^(Yo ur Reminders)](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose/?to=RemindMeBot& subject=List%20Of%20Reminders&message=MyReminders%21)|[^(Feedback)](ht tps://www.reddit.com/message/compose/?to=Watchful1&subject=RemindMeBot %20Feedback)| |-|-|-|-| ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DryPhilosopher8168 · 2023-12-24 05:50 Just to explain the downvotes. The question makes no sense, if you understand static site generators. The output of the static site generator is always something you can selfhost. Hence, most (all?) static site generators are local binaries you can execute on your machine. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Disane87 · 2023-12-24 12:12 Im currently building up my blog multi lingual. I will see how impactful this would be. But at the moment I have no problems. But thanks for the hint 🔥 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Simon-RedditAccount · 2023-12-24 14:06 I prefer Publii - nice electron app that generates HTML (+ supports uploading it directly to supported services). Free & open-source, makes money from premium themes. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- razbuc24 · 2023-12-24 18:33 Ghost hosting is more expensive as it's not easy to install on cheap shared hosting [https://www.softaculous.com/news/scripts/ghost-support-to-be-disconti nued-13090.html](https://www.softaculous.com/news/scripts/ghost- support-to-be-discontinued-13090.html) I prefer Vvveb CMS as an WordPress alternative, it's faster and easier to use. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Disane87 · 2023-12-24 18:45 I don’t think that this point is valid anymore, since the docs are outdated of ghost (which are linked in the article) and the article is from 2017. if you have a normal vps you can totally use ghost there. IMHO the installation of ghost is pretty straight forward, even on vps environments: https://ghost.org/docs/install/ubuntu/ Everyone who runs an own homelab should be able to do this ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 2CatsOnMyKeyboard · 2023-12-24 21:27 Someone needs to explain the hipe around Ghost to me. Yes it's not WordPress, and not PHP. So if you, for one reason or another, hate WordPress and PHP there's that. But I hear it shouting it is better than WordPress. But in practice there are way less plugins, so way less functionality. And it is pretty bare bones as it comes. Its newsletter functionality has to go through one provider (mailgun) as far as I can see. No choice. A lot of extra functions/integrations require Zapier. And any feedback on these severe limitations seem to be answered with either 'it's foss, build it yourself' or 'we're for professionals, this is not expensive'. Please do correct me if I'm totally wrong. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Disane87 · 2023-12-24 21:40 In general your points are valid. Imho the main audience of ghost is not a normal user, it’s an experienced developer. And that’s why I like ghost so much. It’s extendable via workflow tools like n8n or zapier and Ingo that’s the strength of ghost. Even it’s limited functionality catches me, because it does what it should and it makes it good. I blogged some years with Wordpress and I really hate this bloated software. For all stuff you need plugins or such. If you only want to setup quickly a blog imho ghost is the way to go. I don’t hate php or Wordpress, I used both of them many years. But ghost is imho a really good example where focusing on core functionality is way better than to be open for all other stuff, which can be risky if you see so much security issues on Wordpress with third party plugins. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 2CatsOnMyKeyboard · 2023-12-26 22:12 yes, but then just don't install the 3rd party plugins for WordPress and you're at the same
