Highly customizable router suggestions. reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- barlap 路 2023-12-23 01:43 Hello guys. Do you have any suggestions for a router brand that is as highly customizable as possible? Atm I have 2 small servers both connected to a switch that is connected to the ONT provided by my isp but the ISP is kind of a problem because it does not allow me to edit a big part of the router settings (ex dns records for installing adguard home) so I decided that I will pass the traffic from the ONT to a fully customizable router in order to be able to edit the dns records and do much more. For the moment I took a look at the Asus routers and they seem very customizable in every aspect (port forward/firewall/analytics/dhcp etc. ) Do some of you still use routers or everybody has fancy schamncy cisco equipment? 馃槄 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- user01401 路 2023-12-23 01:54 I'm using OpenWrt for my router and access points. You can flash consumer routers but when run on x86 hardware you can easily route gigabit with full SQM, and block lists easily. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FormalBend1517 路 2023-12-23 01:56 Any of the shelf router should allow you to edit dhcp options, including dns servers. ISP provided routers are a different story, custom firmware, locked settings, etc. If you really want to customize as much as possible, then you need pfSense. You can buy a router with pfSense preinstalled, or you can build your own on commodity hardware and install pfSense on it. There are other options available too, pfSense is probably the most mature and most widely used. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SeaNefariousness4835 路 2023-12-23 02:25 You can go opensense or pfsense on a protectli box. Only downside to most of these is the lack of wifi, so you will also need to do an AP of some sort also (ubiquiti up is a good choice) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- darklogic85 路 2023-12-23 02:35 You can actually put it on any hardware and doesn't have to be anything specific. An old PC will do, and it's very customizable. But yeah, no wifi, so you'd have to have a separate AP for that. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mogster2K 路 2023-12-23 02:36 Not sure what you're going for here. Are you looking to roll your own or buy off the shelf? Wifi or no? What sort of OS/ROM? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- housepanther2000 路 2023-12-23 03:30 Build your own with a small form factor PC, a second NIC, and OPNsense. I swear by it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- utahbmxer 路 2023-12-23 06:13 This is the way ---------------------------------------------------------------------- barlap 路 2023-12-23 09:10 I'd rather buy off the shelf because I don' want to invest in another pc for firewall. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Other-Technician-718 路 2023-12-23 09:36 opnsense on a VM or on a mini pc Mikrotik, Fortigate (with subscription), basically any firewall appliance. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- barlap 路 2023-12-23 09:40 Would you recommend microtik over asus? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Other-Technician-718 路 2023-12-23 09:48 I have no real experience with Mikrotik RouterOS or the better Asus routers. But I'd go with something where I can set a default deny rule to only allow certain traffic. I guess I'd avoid any 'unpackage, plugin, forget' router. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SombraBlanca 路 2023-12-23 18:17 Get a dell optiplex 9020 sff from ebay - off shelf pre built you can install proxmox and virtualize *sense on and then you can host many other services on it
