Starting my journey. reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pinkyplant · 2023-12-23 00:16 I’ve always loved self hosting, I’ve mostly hosted on cheap VPS’s and I wanted to start properly, and keep services. I have not that much money. I have no job, only allowance. I was thinking about either getting a really beefy mini pc for around 200-300£ or should I get a few 2-3 for the same price? If I go for multiple I would be either running proxmox or just docker swarm, probably proxmox. I was also looking to run some lite LLM’s on the server, but GPU’s can be added later. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Valencia_Mariana · 2023-12-23 00:30 What are you looking to actually do? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pinkyplant · 2023-12-23 00:31 Host jellyfin, host a small website, Immich, and more. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dazchad · 2023-12-23 05:43 If you want transcoding, I recommend 8th gen Intel or newer. Otherwise pretty much anything works for the most common services. More ram is better, and m.2 ssd is very appealing. People shouldn’t be surprised on how powerful hardware has become. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Valencia_Mariana · 2023-12-23 07:37 Considering you want to save money, look around. If you know someone working in IT see if you can get some hand me down. Look at facebook market place for old towers. I've see i5s less than 10 years old go for 50 quid. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pinkyplant · 2023-12-23 09:35 I’ll have a look and maybe see if I can get any mass computers on FBM. I don’t know anyone working in IT sadly. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pinkyplant · 2023-12-23 09:35 Yeah that’s what people have said. I’m not gonna be transcoding anyway, and ram is important ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Valencia_Mariana · 2023-12-23 19:25 For LLMs, you might consider purchasing by the minute via cloud services, if you're only looking for a few hours here and there.
