Looking for a NAS OS reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bashfulllama · 2023-12-22 20:33 Here is a little background: Just got myself a used computer I want to use as a NAS (current specs i5-4590, 4gb ram, 2 x 2tb HDDs) \-Note, im willing to get a smaller SSD and some ram if needed I installed TrueNAS scale and I am having tons of issues trying to install the truechart repo, so im looking for alternates Here is my main use case: \-ARR stack to stream movies with PLEX \-Run bittorrent client (don't care which one) with the ability to route traffic through my surfshark VPN \-Self host files (mainly photos/videos to replace google photos) \-Ideally there is a good web UI or app that my friends/family can upload/download from I was origianlly drawn to TrueNAS scale because while i have used linux, I'm definitely not very comfortable with terminal and setting up docker. The installation of apps in TrueNAS is a simple install click. However, Scale has become a dumpster fire of bugs so im looking for alternatives. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- fart_vandalay · 2023-12-22 20:48 https://perfectmediaserver.com/ I went with the "manual install" route using Debian server; https://perfectmediaserver.com/03-installation/manual-install-ubuntu/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mervincm · 2023-12-22 20:50 Opwnmediavault ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bashfulllama · 2023-12-22 20:55 Thanks for the suggestion. Seems interesting. Any particular reason for this over OMV? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bashfulllama · 2023-12-22 20:56 OMV was definitely on my radar, maybe i just over-estimate the complications of adding apps. What does that process kinda look like? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mervincm · 2023-12-22 20:57 Docker compose is what I do. Via the OMV extras add on. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- iamofnohelp · 2023-12-22 20:58 Should look at docker containers for all this too ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mervincm · 2023-12-22 20:58 Docker compose is what I use. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mervincm · 2023-12-22 20:59 Via OMV extras plug in ---------------------------------------------------------------------- iiiiiiiiiiip · 2023-12-22 21:01 Unraid is very user friendly with a lot of guides available, makes using docker trivial as all the most popular docker containers have premade configurations you can use which makes setting up an *arr stack with Jellyfin (or Plex) easy. The downside is that it costs $60 which puts a lot of people off. When I was building my NAS I went with Unraid over TrueNAS because I was starting with 2 drives (1 for parity) and wanted to add more drives later which Unraid does perfectly. With ZFS vdevs you couldn't add more drives at the time so you'd have to reformat the entire vdev or make a new 'raid' with the new drives alongside your initial setup. I think you can add drives to vdevs now but it's not trivial from what I've seen. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- fart_vandalay · 2023-12-22 21:01 for me personally, I do not need any of the features offered by either Proxmox or Open Media Vault. I prefer to manage my server through Linux, not through a third-party OS overlay type deal. If that is not your preference then you may like using Proxmox or OMV as described in that wiki. And dont forget there is also Unraid which is still quite popular. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bashfulllama · 2023-12-22 21:01 Yeah like truenas scale is just using glorified containers. Like I said, I'm just pretty unfamiliar with the process and there's many ways to skin a cat. Like there's OMV and using portainer and then there's OMV on proxmox etc etc. I think my inexperience is just coming through. A bit of I dont know what I don't know, and I'm just unsure if I'll be able to configure things properly / do what I wanna do ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bashfulllama · 2023-12-22 21:03 Yeah this is what I'm coming to understand as well, paying the $60 does kinda pain me. I am definitely attracted to the pre-made containers, since I'm definitely new to docker. I guess I can always try the trial and if it's pretty seamless it's probably worth it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- iiiiiiiiiiip · 2023-12-22 21:06 Another alternative for an easier Docker experience might be to try out Portainer, a docker manager, it's not as easy as Unraid but there's quite a lot of community made templates available for that too, good luck. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bashfulllama · 2023-12-22 21:07 Thank you ---------------------------------------------------------------------- fart_vandalay · 2023-12-22 21:08 a lot of the media server apps you will want to run already have Docker containers and sample Docker Compose yaml files available here; https://docs.linuxserver.io/images/docker-sonarr/ plain Linux + Docker + those Docker Compose examples + a disk array software such as mergerfs + snapRAID will handle pretty much your entire server needs I think, if all you need are containers ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bashfulllama · 2023-12-22 21:14 OK I'll look into this solution as well. Thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- katrinatransfem · 2023-12-22 21:30 TrueNAS core perhaps? It is FreeBSD-based and has been around a lot longer, so should be more stable. Personally I use regular FreeBSD for my NAS, but that does require you to use the terminal. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- giacomog97 · 2023-12-22 22:46 CasaOS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Faith-in-Strangers · 2023-12-22 22:53 All these services you need should be run as docker containers anyways. Any OS you like that supports Docker is fine. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bashfulllama · 2023-12-22 22:57 This looks like a Beauty. I'm going to install Debian on proxmox and try this first. Thank you ---------------------------------------------------------------------- giacomog97 · 2023-12-23 00:00 I like that is very easy. Plug and play for try new application ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Skotticus · 2023-12-23 00:19 Plus one for Unraid. It's got a lot of really good features, including great control over spinning drives down or up based on usage. Saves a lot of money because it only has to spin up drives that are actively being used; it will eventually save you enough in power to more than pay itself back given enough time. They also put the the upgrade tiers on sale from time to time, so keep an eye out for that. It's also a very good introduction to the world of Linux and Docker. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Huldmer · 2023-12-23 08:25 there's a coupon code right now that makes it about $35 if you google for it ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kmisterk · 2023-12-25 23:32 ## Post Removed Hey, bashfulllama!
