Ways to play music on my Android TV from my selfhosted NAS/docker server ? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- worldcitizencane · 2023-12-22 18:14 For a long time I used Emby, and while it is an excellent video player, I am not so keen on it for playing music. My stereo these days is a pair of quality speakers connected to my 65" TV fed by a Google TV box (aka. Google Chromecast with TV). I use docker on the homelab. Other than Emby I run Navidrome and of course file sharing (SMB, NFS). So I'm looking for an alternative for playing music. The things I partcularly are missing are: * the ability to have the screen switch off (or go dark) while playing music. * a better search/sorting/playlist system. * a "pretty" interface would be nice too ;) So does that even exist for Android TV? Of course I have searched, both Google Play and the Internet in general, but for some reason there don't seem to be much available. A little odd since a lot of (most?) consumer TV's these days have some form of built in Android Smart TV. I don't mind about the backend as long as it's something that exist as a docker container. I already had a look at SonicLair, but I'd really like a better search/sorting system, and besides, it crashes when I click on playlist. Another client is foobar2000 which I used to like on PC, but I'd prefer something where the thinking part happens on the server, not on the relatively weak client. Maybe someone have some input how to make this work in a good way? Otherwise, any other alternatives welcome. Open source preferred. :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheWicklowWolf · 2023-12-22 20:05 Jellyfin app can play music but I don't know how good that experience is compared to other options... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- worldcitizencane · 2023-12-22 20:11 Jellyfin is essentially a fork of Emby, so not much difference there. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheWicklowWolf · 2023-12-22 20:20 Fair enough, I doubt music on TV is a priority for too many ---------------------------------------------------------------------- worldcitizencane · 2023-12-22 20:32 You're probably right, though I don't understand why. A lot of people have some serious surround sound gear for their TV, why wouldn't they want to use that for music as well? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheWicklowWolf · 2023-12-22 20:35 I'd say most just use Bluetooth ---------------------------------------------------------------------- worldcitizencane · 2023-12-22 20:51 So even though they have a perfectly good Android TV they would go out and buy a bluetooth adapter to feed the music? Seems a bit unneceessary? Maybe it's a generational thing. Like with games, I play on my PC, hate playing on consoles and would never consider playing games on my phone. But then again, I'm a boomer so there :/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheWicklowWolf · 2023-12-22 21:03 I meant a Bluetooth surround sound system ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Conscious-Fault-8800 · 2023-12-22 23:54 Many Will just chromecast from a music app in their phone. I use navidrome as backend and symfonium as an app and cast to my AndroidTV often. But an app on Androidtv would be nice certainly. I think your options are limited to jellyfin/emby/plex (plexamp specificilly is supposed to be very nice but I havent tried it due to disliking plex as a company) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- worldcitizencane · 2023-12-23 11:14 I think Plexamp is only for phones, I don't see an Android TV app. And yes, I agree. I just had a look at Symfonium and I must say that looks pretty good, even though it's not free.
