What are some fun things to selfhost and share with friends and family? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hirakath · 2023-12-22 05:05 Hi guys, I need some suggestions on fun things to selfhost and share with my friends and family. Right now I have Plex and Overseerr which is really fun to see my friends and family using them but that’s about all I have. I have other services running like Tautulli and Portainer etc but those aren’t really meant to be shared. My initial thoughts were selfhosted ebooks to replace Kindle but I haven’t really started looking into it just yet. I guess I’m still trying to gather some ideas first before I pursue anything. Looking forward to hearing some nice suggestions! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Square_Lawfulness_33 · 2023-12-22 05:23 check out [https://wiki.servarr.com](https://wiki.servarr.com) and [https://docs.linuxserver.io](https://docs.linuxserver.io) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- djgizmo · 2023-12-22 05:40 Fun… not a lot. Maybe some cooking / cookbook / Recipe apps? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hirakath · 2023-12-22 05:55 Yeah that’s my goal. My friends and family won’t really care about stuff like Tautulli or Portainer etc. I am looking for something that they can entertain themselves with. Thanks for the suggestions, I think those can be something my mom and my sister will use so I will look into those too! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DrunkOnKnight · 2023-12-22 06:30 Immich for photo/video backups and sharing ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GTKdope · 2023-12-22 08:48 music server, Navidrome maybe ?. What I did was asked friends and family for their spofity playlist. Then used spotdl to download the songs and I server those on navidrome. (There are multiple ways to get better quality music) But spotdl was very easy, and if you have youtube premium you can get the 256kbps audio. It is not very high quality, but good enough. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jonteponte71 · 2023-12-22 09:20 Tube Archivist is a great way to limit what kids get to consume on youtube. And is also catnip for datahoarders 🐈 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- xSean93 · 2023-12-22 09:29 [https://awesome-selfhosted.net](https://awesome-selfhosted.net) There's a self hosted GeoGuessr Clone. Or you could host your own AI. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Anejey · 2023-12-22 10:49 Could host an internet radio if you got some sort of music collection already going. I use AzuraCast for this, works great and runs in Docker. You just either upload songs or create a bind mount to the music directory, create playlists, and then the app will just stream it 24/7. Some apps can then take the url and play it, or just play it via browser. It's not as convenient as Spotify, but if you want something to just play in the kitchen it's a good option. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SimLogPluron · 2023-12-22 10:52 Iam trying Mealie at the Moment and sharing it with Friends and Family. Its for Recipes and Meal Planing. If you host it behind a Reverse-Proxy. Copy the Invitation Link. The ones that get send by eMail are on Localhost. Need to check this later. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- greenscoobie86 · 2023-12-22 11:06 It’s been Plex for me. Shared it with mom, friends, in laws. Music/shows and movies. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- EndlessHiway · 2023-12-22 13:54 Porn ---------------------------------------------------------------------- unofficialtech · 2023-12-22 14:34 EmulatorJS as a web-based mini arcade ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Eoghann_Irving · 2023-12-22 14:37 Well a lot of it depends on what their interests are but for example I am trialing out: * Codex - for comicbook reading * Audiobookshelf - for... well audio books. Really enjoying this one and it can do podcasts too. * Tandoor - for recipes, seems to be close to feature parity with sites like Plan To Eat * Immich - for photos. It's under heavy development but the featureset is impressive including face and object recognition. And I haven't set it up yet but I'm probably going to try out Emulatorjs next, seems like it might be fun for ROMs. All of those can run in Docker so multiplatform and easy to move. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cardboard-kansio · 2023-12-22 16:05 For family, I get the most usage from the following: * Wireguard VPN for accessing from outside of the home * Audiobookshelf for audiobook streaming * Emby for other media * RWSWOL for simple wake-on-lan control of any sleeping machine * (Honourable mention to PiHole, it's passive for them but they enjoy fewer ads) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- captainmustard · 2023-12-22 17:53 Wireguard + pihole for adblocking on mobile devices. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hirakath · 2023-12-22 18:53 This is a cool idea although how is it any different from me putting the audio files on a Plex library and playing from there? I'm already doing that anyway. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hirakath · 2023-12-22 18:54 Yeah I've taken a look at Mealie as well a few months back. I should probably try installing it. Me and my mom could definitely use this, maybe even my sister. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hirakath · 2023-12-22 18:55 Yes same for me, I've been enjoying sharing my library with them and I'm looking for more ways to do the same but maybe not for movies/shows/music, or home videos, since I already have that covered. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hirakath · 2023-12-22 18:59 Oh cool!! My brother and I used to emulate older consoles using VisualBoyAdvance and EPSXE. Those are all local of course but I didn't think about hosting it. This is like the best idea I saw in here so far! Thank you! Is EmulatorJS currently the best option? I've never looked at it before. Are you able to use a controller to play the games? It's been so long since I've played games on an emulator, this brings back a lot of memories, thank you for the suggestion.. seriously, thank you! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- greenscoobie86 · 2023-12-22 18:59 I thought about the same thing too, couldn’t come up with more use cases for my non tech family and friends aside from sharing home security cams/footage/monitoring. Truth be told if I can make myself responsible for one less “service” it’s a good thing haha. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Anejey · 2023-12-22 19:02 I suppose it's just more convenient. With Plex you gotta setup the playback and even then it might not keep on playing at all times (I haven't used Plex to play music, so I dunno). With Azura it's a proper radio as that's what it's made for. I'd say just give it a try. Might end up something you like, might not. With docker it takes minutes to set up (be aware though, it's rather CPU/ram heavy.) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hirakath · 2023-12-22 19:02 Thank you! I am interested in all of these except maybe Immich. I don't think I have a need for it. But really looking forward to trying out Codex and Audiobookshelf, and most especially EmulatorJS as suggested by someone else as well! Thank you! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hirakath · 2023-12-22 19:07 Hey, could you share some initial starting point for me to look into if I wanted to get myself some home security cameras? You mentioning it sort of piqued my interest. This is something that me and my wife could use. Stuff like what should I look for when buying the hardware. Which software is better to install etc. - any tips really. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hirakath · 2023-12-22 19:09 I have a few music libraries on my Plex and it loops indefinitely for me. Sometimes I have one album or playlist running on the background while I work from home. My wife sometimes listens but not as much as I do though. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BCIT_Richard · 2023-12-22 19:55 My favorite service I host is [n.eko](https://github.com/m1k1o/neko) - a self-hosted virtual browser that runs in Docker ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheWicklowWolf · 2023-12-22 20:08 If you're using plex, plexamp is good for music ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hirakath · 2023-12-22 20:11 Yup, already using it. I love it too! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mfinn999 · 2023-12-22 20:14 >Tandoor - for recipes, seems to be close to feature parity with sites like Plan To Eat Thanks for this recommendation. This sounds so cool. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- unofficialtech · 2023-12-22 20:15 You can use a controller, but I have only done some basic arcade games like pacman and 1942, so not sure how feature-ful it is in thst space and what config works like (I have a PC with Lakka installed where I do more emulation to my TV - EmulatorJS is more for when I'm out and about and need to burn some time and brain cells). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hirakath · 2023-12-22 20:50 Oh, cool! I have been looking for something like this where if someone sends me a link and I'm a little suspicious of it, I often go to my computer, spin up a VM, then check the link and dispose of the VM. Is this something that can replace that process for me? Is it easy enough to dispose of the virtual browser and spin up a new one when I need it completely fresh? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hirakath · 2023-12-22 21:29 Yeah so that was my idea, I would love to be able to play some old PS games like Legend of Legaia or Suikoden on the TV using my controller via an emulator. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BCIT_Richard · 2023-12-22 21:39 I can't say for sure from a security perspective, I can not say at all and would prefer someone else chime in on that aspect, however I have noticed it does build from the config file on initialization, so I would think it should be perfectly fine. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hirakath · 2023-12-22 22:03 Thank you I will try it out sometime after the holidays. Have a great one! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TenuredKarma1 · 2023-12-23 00:01 I would like to host something like the old school yahoo games site. Where you can join card games, spades was the best. Poker, solitaire old janky pool games all the good old games. But I haven't been able to find anything close everything I can find is virtual table top and role-playing games. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- greenscoobie86 · 2023-12-23 00:11 I’ve been unsung Wyze with great success on many sites/etc. also have used FLIR in the past. Some overseas made no name NVR systems as well. I know it’s not the best choice but if I was you I’d just pick up a Wyze cam and and SD card, hook it up to your wifi connection and play around. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hirakath · 2023-12-23 00:33 Thank you, I’ll go research on Wyze products tonight. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Kaleodis · 2023-12-23 10:45 For next year may i recommend [https://github.com/Wingysam/Christmas- Community](https://github.com/Wingysam/Christmas-Community) ? This way you don't get a chat group with random word documents for wishlists.
