Advice on NAS? 1 Bay Plex Server and Backup Solution combined with Amazon Deep Glacier? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- brightwoof · 2023-12-21 16:10 Hi I just realized that my HDD external drive is getting up there. 10 years old. It might be time to upgrade and ensure I don't lose all this data. I'm fairly minimal so the idea I had in mind was buying a 1-bay solution and having a script backup only the really important things like photos to deep glacier. That way I have offsite redundancy baked in. What would be the ideal NAS to get to accomplish this? Ideally I could backup and view things from my iphone, and run it as a plex server at home. Should I explore building my own solution? Thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LuckyHedgehog · 2023-12-21 17:54 What's your budget, and how confident are you with the idea of building your own? I would recommend at least having a second hard drive that is mirrored, much more fault tolerant and could save you the costs and time of getting it back from deep glacier. There are cheapish raid hard drive enclosures that just plug in to your computer and act as a single hard drive, that might be good enough in your scenario? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- brightwoof · 2023-12-21 18:25 I don't get the point in RAID for my needs. I'm going to throw a lot of junk and videos on there that I can redownload if lost, the personal photos are the only thing I want backed up and that requires glacial anyway to reduce single location failure. And it would involve redundancy through amazon. Plugging in a drive to my computer and just dragging things over sounds okay though. Is it okay to have an external drive always plugged in? I couldn't run plex if I did this however. If I went this route I could just have my macbook trigger rclone to update glacier after I move files over. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LuckyHedgehog · 2023-12-21 18:41 Depends on how much data you're talking about, Glacier can end up being very spendy to retrieve the data. Probably doesn't matter in your scenario, but it could also take several hours to a day before it is ready to retrieve. The type of enclosure I have used before plugged in using USB or SATA, and it was as easy as dropping two identical hard drives into the enclosure. It handled the rest, would blink if it detected a hard drive failure and could even hot swap if I needed to. It doesn't get more simple than that, and is much easier than requesting and downloading from Glacier. To be clear though, I don't think this is an either/or situation, by all means back everything up to Glacier in addition to the second HD. The second HD will make your life easier in the event a HD crashes I ran plex on it as well for 5+ years before upgrading to a dedicated NAS server running TrueNas. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- brightwoof · 2023-12-21 18:44 > The second HD will make your life easier in the event a HD crashes How often has this happened to you? I would probably find myself just using it as standalone instead of a raid setup ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LuckyHedgehog · 2023-12-21 18:54 >How often has this happened to you? Sometimes they last 10+ years, others crash within a couple years. I usually replace mine after 5 years because of how cheap they have gotten in recent years. >So do you think it's better to have a dedicated NAS and dedicated plex? combined seems simpler That depends on your budget and technical experience. Having a dedicated NAS is certainly a better option if you have $500+ to spend on either a pre-built or build your own. I run TrueNas Scale which lets me host a number of applications like Plex/Jellyfin, SyncThing, Calibre-Web, etc. plus manages SSL certs and the reverse proxy, all in addition to easily setting up NFS or SMB for the network I have heard Synology is pretty solid too, but have never used it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kmisterk · 2023-12-22 17:07 ## Post Removed Hey, brightwoof!
