Gluetun performance issues? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cm2003 · 2023-12-21 08:22 Hi there. I’ve read about gluetun in this sub and really find the concept amazing. So I’ve spun it up (using portainer, running on a RPI4 with 8GB RAM), allowed http and Shadowsocks proxy and gave it a try. Everything ran out of the box with no issues at all. However the download speed has decreased by about 50-60%. Without a vpn I get around 170 Mbps down. With a VPN run on my rpi3 with 4GB I get like 160 Mbps. However using Gluetun I’m at 70-80 Mbps. Upload speeds are pretty much unchanged at 45-50 Mbps. Does anyone else experience that? For clarification: I’ve obviously used the same VPN in both scenarios. I’ve also tried it several times, always with the same result. I’ve also tried http proxy and shadowsocks. Also the same. So I suppose docker is creating a big hit to the speeds? Anyone else experiencing this and maybe found a way around that? Would really like to use gluetun, but not by sacrificing half of my speed :) Thank you! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- digitalindependent · 2023-12-21 14:04 Just trying to be thorough: Network link from Pi to Internet is 1GB all the way up (switch etc)? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cm2003 · 2023-12-21 14:27 Yes. They are wired the same. To the same switch and router. The only hardware difference is that the docker pi is running Ubuntu on a rpi 4, the rpi 3 (my VPN AP) is running raspbian. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dittydumdittydoo · 2023-12-21 14:37 Are you using WireGuard? It is supposedly more efficient than OpenVPN. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Adam_Meshnet · 2023-12-21 14:58 I can't relate to the performance issues with gluetun, as when it works, I don't really see the difference in download/upload speeds, honestly. But that's when it works, which for whatever reason happens to be pretty rare. It seems like the service silently fails and containers that are under its umbrella can't connect to the internet. I haven't gotten around to more troubleshooting steps then just turning it off and on, whenever something breaks. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- henry_tennenbaum · 2023-12-21 16:00 I've had the exact opposite experience, weirdly. I'm a huge wireguard fan but got consistently bad performance with mullvad via gluetun. Switching to opevpn instead gives me line speed. I remember there being an entry regarding this on the gluetun wiki. Took me forever to diagnose because I just assumed wireguard couldn't be the issue. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cm2003 · 2023-12-21 20:06 Hm. I am using WireGuard. Might give openvpn a try then. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cm2003 · 2023-12-21 20:33 I’ve tried openvpn and unfortunately it’s worst for me. Downloadspeed drops to 25 Mbps :(
