Prod/Dev is pretty self explanatory.. Arr is on a separate docker host because the SQLite back-end of each *Arr container is super temperamental on "slow" storage. I initially set everything up on the Prod host but the DBs would constantly corrupt themselves because it's running on spinning rust (12 x 4TB HDDs). I switched it over to the local storage on my ESXi host which is 6 x SSDs. I could have just mounted a separate drive from the local storage but I wanted to keep things separate because the Arr stack also uses a lot of resources (lidarr is currently sitting at 1.2GB memory by itself..). This is just separation of conerns. For firewall purposes, it's the only machine that'll talk to incoming traffic from my router and it can't send traffic internally except ssh to my jumpbox or accessing the specific services I route externally (amp, plex). 1 is my general services instance which handles almost all of my docker containers except... 1 is my vpn-bound instance which has no WAN egress except through a kill switched VPN. NFS 2 and 3 do not support file locking, plain and simple, so there is nothing to ensure mutex when using a file-based database like SQLite. SQLite also specifically recommend against using NFS. When 2 threads inevitable try to write to the database at the same time, corruption will occur. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ApathiaLol · 2023-12-21 17:32 The VM disk was on an iSCSI volume, not NFS. I found that when importing libraries into any of the *Arr applications, the DB would corrupt itself. Setting them up one at a time would get me further, but running them all on the same host with an iSCSI volume would inevitably cause corruption in one or all of the applications. Moving them to a VM with a local disk solved the issue entirely. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ApathiaLol · 2023-12-21 17:33 PowerEdge R640 with 2x Intel(R) Xeon(R) Gold 6130 CPU, 384 GB ram, 6x 186GB SAS SSDs in RAID-5 (1 TB usable space) Rackstation with 12x 4TB HDDs with 20TB usable space TrueNAS with 4x 16TB drives in a ZFS vdev with 40TB usable space Almost everything listed on my Homepage (with the exception of Networking/Storage) is dockerized. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- servergeek82 · 2023-12-21 17:38 Sexy stats... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wryterra · 2023-12-21 18:22 Ahhh, gotcha ---------------------------------------------------------------------- iizakill · 2023-12-21 18:25 Can you share your file to configure this similarly? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ngnirmal · 2023-12-21 18:29 What is the name of the program that sjows the overview? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Odd_Relationship4142 · 2023-12-21 18:37 What is that? My suggestion is to do what I always do… Google the various widgets to see what these programs do and see what seems useful. I started out with only a few Docker and LXC containers that I needed and kept expanding from there. My next suggestion for you would be to setup PiHole or AdGuard Home DNS for network-wide ad blocking. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nihnuhname · 2023-12-23 00:54 rooted router ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Cheap_Specific9878 · 2023-12-23 10:23 Thanks for your response. My PC is fairly powerful but I don't know if I should just put Ubuntu server on it with docker or if I just should load Proxmox and use this for ubuntu server and other things. There are so many people saying that I should use Proxmox or I should use just the server and could also virtualize on the Ubuntu server as well. While I am here, what would you recommend? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Sparkynerd · 2023-12-23 13:34 Again, what follows is just my suggestions from my experiences. As they say: “Opinions are like armpits. Everyone has them, and they all stink.” When I started my homelab, I ran a few VMs on a PC, then eventually migrated to ESXi. I ran that for a while, used Proxmox at work and a little a home. Still running ESXi. Then I decided to give Proxmox another try. It was a game changer for me. Super easy to snapshot/backup VMs, clone VMs, spin up new VMs and containers, etc. I now also run Proxmox Backup Server on a VM in my NAS for automated backups of everything. Proxmox snapshots and backups are a lifesaver when you need them. With all that being said, I would recommend Proxmox for the flexibility and scalability. For example: I setup a Linux VM on Proxmox that I can access from any computer or mobile device in my house, so what ever webpages, apps, etc. that are open on that VM can be easily accessed from anywhere without having to open them on each device. I can use the oldest, lowest power PC and remotely open my nice powerful VM and do anything without resource issues. Next, lookup “Tteck Proxmox LXC templates”… there’s a ton of great LXC containers that you simply copy and paste the command into the Proxmox shell, and it will spin them up very easily. That’s how I drastically upgraded my homelab experience, and there are so many containers I am using now that I never knew I needed. I’m running a Unifi controller, AdGuard Home, Homepage, Wazuh, PiAlert, an Ubuntu LXC for my weather station software (just to name a few) as LXC containers under Proxmox. As far as Docker goes… right now I’m running my Docker containers in my Synology NAS, but may eventually spin up a Debian VM with Docker under Proxmox. What’s left of my Docker containers are mostly media based, such as the *Arr apps, and Emby (an amazing media server). I know this was a lot of info, but I hope it helps your decision. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hotdogsarecooked · 2023-12-23 14:52 I love this and I have an older server I wanna do this to for some low resources things like streaming servers or minecraft. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mcleod1445 · 2023-12-25 06:12 @OP how did you get the “healthy” indicator for services and how did you create the cloudfared link? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dreadedhamish · 2023-12-25 22:46 The docker integration will automatically use health status if the container provides it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dreadedhamish · 2023-12-25 22:47 Homepage ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dreadedhamish · 2023-12-25 22:48 no glances? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mcleod1445 · 2023-12-25 23:43 Could you point me to where to find a write up on this?
