First time configuration of Proxmox Homelab reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cheeky_panduh · 2023-12-21 00:08 I want to build a homelab / home server. I plan to run Proxmox bare metal on my machine and consider to run several VMs like Ubuntu / Debian server using Docker and Portainer. I don’t think I’d need need clusters with Kubernetes. I don’t want to use LXC (containers) directly on Proxmox due to poor security. The machine should be used as all purpose homelab. It’s a mix of media / software development / file storage / backup / NAS server. Just to name some services: - GitLab - Plex / Jellyfin - Sonarr / Radarr - - Nextcloud / PhotoPrism / Bitwarden/Vaultwarden - AdGuard / PiHole / Nginx Proxy Manager / Traefik / Uptime Kuma Here’s the list of hardware: HP EliteDesk 800 G5 SFF Specs: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c06414352 CPU: Intel i5 9500 GPU: Intel UHD Graphics 630 PSU: 250 W (80 PLUS Platinum) SSD: Crucial P3 M2 NVMe SSD (2 x 2TB) SSD: Crucial MX500 SATA SSD (1 x 500GB) HDD: Seagate Exos X18 (2 x 16TB) RAM: Crucial Pro RAM 64GB DDR4 2666 (2x32GB) Since I’m not an export on storage and file systems. What would be a reasonable configuration for this system? So what file systems (like ext4 and ZFS) should I use and how should I structure them? Are there best practices? How should I setup the VMs? Should each category (like media, software development etc.) become a dedicated VM? The SATA SSD (Crucial MX500 SATA SSD 500GB) would be used with ext4 as boot drive and maybe storage for ISO images. The two HDDs (Seagate Exos X18, 2 x 16 TB) should be for file storage with Nextcloud and backups. How should I use the two NVME SSDs? Thanks for your help.
