Hardware question reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- yelloguy ยท 2023-12-20 22:25 I set up a Proxmox server using a cheap craigslist home PC with 8GB RAM last year. It has worked very well for me so far. Now I am thinking of picking up another one like that. But this got me thinking if I am better off buying a server grade hardware instead. There are a ton of refurb "workstations" on Newegg with Intel Xeon processors and 32GB RAM for around $100. The problem is that I have no experience with this kind of hardware. Has anyone looked into using one of those for home lab? Do you have any advice for me? I have only 3-4 LXC containers currently and they total up to 5GB used memory. But I am thinking I can replace my Synology with Xpenology, and maybe set up a Windows virtual machine. In fact, I am curious if I can take it to the next level and run Lightroom Classic in a VM like that - if I can get a decent graphics card and pass that through to my Windows VM. However, at that point, am I better off just running a Windows machine (bare metal) headless and RDP into it when I want?
