It is pretty good at the fundamentals - file storage, sync (to desktop, mobile) and sharing - but the rest isn't relevant to us for sure. We came to NC from Owncloud after issues with performance/reliability/upgrades. I'd totally embrace a 'Nextcloud light' which stuck to the core offerings, and happily give them money in exchange for a slimline offering. 2c, YMMC, etc. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BouncyPancake · 2023-12-21 00:52 For Calender, I use Simple Mobile Tools' Calender app (be careful now though since they were bought by the worst mobile app company on Google Play). I've been using the news feed reader for a while via phone, it's a little rough around the edges compared to other solutions but works well enough for my needs. Been using the notes function via my phone and while I don't use it often, it works for me pretty well. And I also use the calendar function but more passively; mostly use it for set once important event reminders; birthdays, anniversaries, etc. I don't really use my phone to add events to it on the regular as I use Gmail and it's easier to just take a booking email and add that to gcalendar than my nextcloud calendar. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Midnight_Rising · 2023-12-21 01:37 Is there a better cloud office suite? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- krelltunez · 2023-12-21 01:43 I use a lot of the Nextcloud functionality. I originally came to Nextcloud for calendar and contacts (de-Googling my life), but found many of the other features useful. For calendar, you can sync to iOS calendar directly or Android using DAVx5 and then use something like Simple Calendar. This works for contacts too. For Tasks, I also use DAVx5 and the Tasks.org app which supports CalDAV. I use Notes but only via Obsidian. I sync to my mobile devices using FolderSync Pro. The Memories app for Nextcloud is much better than the default photos app, and there's a brand new Android app for it as well. Most recently, I started using News, which has a great Android app. The one thing I don't use much is the document storage as I already use OneDrive for that and I want my synced files to be somewhere other than on my own server. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PinkPonyForPresident · 2023-12-21 01:55 Yes. It's my daily driver for basically everything. I use the Memories app for photos. Files for university and work. The integrated office suit for office stuff and presentations. Better than anything Nextcloud currently has and probably ever will. So for a service that's so specific and so we'll taken care of, I'm not even considering replacing it with anything Nextcloud. Other examples would be Matrix (as opposed to Nextcloud Talk) or Obsidian (as opposed to the various Notes or Collections). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GameKing505 · 2023-12-21 02:17 GOT it ok that makes sense. But every feature has a competing specialized service that is better executed. The biggest one - syncing, is outshined by Syncthing. Simple concept, simple management, easy connections. Smart image gallery - Immich works so much smoother than Photos or Memories. Notetaking/calendar/organization - Not a webservice but Obsidian takes the cake. Services like Bookstack, outline, wikijs are way better. Document organization - Paperless-ngx is not-even-in-the-same-ballpark good. Office apps - They can be used as standalone services, if needed. I rarely, if ever, used collaboration. What's left is file sharing. Sounds nice but I never got used to the mobile app. I would end up using the webui. But I could use a file browser with SMB/NFS and get the full power of a file browser. I ended up maintaining a full-fledget stack with all bells and whistles. Working fine and fast. And I would still use the other services instead. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- txmail · 2023-12-21 05:03 Yes, basically logged in all day with multiple tabs. I use the calendar and notes, but more than anything I use the file browser and OpenOffice integration so I can edit documents (word, excel etc) online without needing it installed. This lets me work from basically any device with a web browser. Also love the integrated mind maps plugin. I also just installed the bookmark plugin, which I need to make time to see how well that works. (phone backups, notes, kanban, contacts and calendar). But the more I use it the more I think its kinda mediocre, its slow and bloated, mobile versions of the apps are hit or miss, and the apps itself lack quite a lot of configuration and features. There is much better alternatives for each of the apps but that would mean having a ton more services and accounts to manage, which is why I was interested in nextcloud in the first place. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Xiakit · 2023-12-21 12:04 I use it to sync shopping lists and to share calendars ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wolfbyknight · 2023-12-21 12:26 I use it a lot. Carnet for quick notes and lists. Tasks app. I've trialed Deck a bit and it's not bad. I have the Notes mobile app, but I only use it sparingly for scratching stuff down or looking stuff up on the go, I do most of my real organization and notetaking from my desktop using QOwnNotes. Normally anything I do from my phone here is temporary, or gets organized or rewritten later from my desk. Same goes for the calendar syncing. Davx5 syncs the calendar and I use Etar to view it. It has been glitchy in the past, but it works well enough for viewing. I do most of the actual editing from the desktop, for punching in work schedules and such. Contacts syncing via Davx5 as well, not much to say here. It just works, never had to mess with it, but I don't have too many contacts on my personal phone. I use Tasks.org for tasks. This one I do almost entirely from mobile, because the app actually supports some features that aren't natively supported, like repeat tasks. Obviously I use it to sync documents, photos, etc from my phone and desktop. Being the main feature, it would be silly not to. I also use the filesystem as an automatic backup location for my OPNSense router. I use the News app for an RSS reader on both mobile and web. I use this a lot. It has made keeping up with FOSS projects and industry news so much easier. I occasionally use other applets here and there. I'm currently evaluating the bookmark syncing app and floccus browser extention for Firefox vs using Linkwarden. I'm leaning towards Linkwarden on this just because it has a much better web interface. Are all of these things perfect? Heavens no, far from it. But it gives me control and it's not *too* much work or headache to maintain so far. I used Disroot.org's Nextcloud server for a couple years, recently transitioned to running my own locally now that I have the means, so I was already adjusted to the workflow. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Sinister_Crayon · 2023-12-21 17:28 I replaced Photos with [Memories](https://apps.nextcloud.com/apps/memories) and it's a LOT better.
