Looking for a simple "share files with friends" type app? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MacaroniAndSmegma · 2023-12-20 19:47 Sorry if this is a FAQ (I did read the FAQ) I'm looking for a simple file manager app that I can share with a few buddies that will just give us a simple file tree buddy1- * file1 * file2 buddy2- * file4 * file6 Where we can upload files to our buddy folder and download files from the other buddy folders. Huge Nextcloud fan but it's WAY too overkill for this scenario and besides, from what I can see it doesn't even support this? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FunDeckHermit · 2023-12-20 19:50 Syncthing ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MacaroniAndSmegma · 2023-12-20 19:54 Not sure Syncthing will work with non technical friends? Also the folders I want to share are not local to my machine? They're on a VPS? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FunDeckHermit · 2023-12-20 19:58 Syncthing works on Windows, Android and Linux. I use it to make backups for my non-tech family. (One way sync, Deletions ignored) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MacaroniAndSmegma · 2023-12-20 20:00 Gotcha, sorry I should have been more explicit (I've edited my post) - I really need a webapp - asking them to install local software won't work. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rubenix_bcn · 2023-12-20 20:21 maybe filebrowser? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MacaroniAndSmegma · 2023-12-20 20:25 This looks perfect! Thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rubenix_bcn · 2023-12-20 20:27 enjoy it, its a nice app!! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MacaroniAndSmegma · 2023-12-20 21:07 BUD!!! You nailed the brief, this is precisely what I was looking for! Consider yourself buddy3 - and if you're ever in Ireland I'll buy you a steak dinner, or the best seafood you've ever eaten, or get you blind drunk on Beamish and Jameson.... I've no idea what you're into but I owe you one! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- joost00719 · 2023-12-20 22:46 I think you can mount an sftp server in windows like you mount a smb share. Test if that works and then walk your friends through it once. Or teach them how to use filezilla ---------------------------------------------------------------------- v1kzs · 2023-12-21 11:10 [Afterlogic Aurora](https://afterlogic.com/aurora) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Impossible-Check-684 · 2023-12-21 23:17 I was going to suggest this one as well, I'm running filebrowser on every single one of my servers (easy file manager). If you ever need to access multiple directories, other than the default one: https://cloudtechtips.com/network/using-file-browser-with-multiple- paths-or-directories/448/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MacaroniAndSmegma · 2023-12-21 23:55 I'm a couple of days in and have rolled it out to the NTBs (non technical buddies) - it's been a huge success. I've got round the multiple directories thing using symlinks. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lensman3a · 2023-12-22 20:52 Along the same lines, if your friends are savvy in Linux you could mount files systems on their machines using NFS and drag and drop. Probably would need to mount FUSE, file systems in user space, to make it simple. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- joost00719 · 2023-12-22 22:24 Why would you expose an nfs share over the internet? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lensman3a · 2023-12-23 05:12 IPv6 has a encrypted mode. Sounds like the OP is moving videos or whatever. NFS also have a encrypted mode for for the files. NFSv4 uses Kerberos. NFS is 40 year old technology and it just works. You can always drop an encrypted zip file into the directory and unzip it on the other computer.
