Lingarr: A simple app to translate subtitles reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lingarr · 2023-12-20 15:17 Lately, I've been busy working on a simple app that can translate my subtitles. As I am living in a multilingual household, it's hard to find certain subtitles. I've experimented with running a local AI instance and used the OpenAI API extensively, but sadly, they tended to deform the texts, and it took multiple very slow API calls to complete. Eventually I decided to go with a Machine Translation API called [LibreTranslate](https://libretranslate.com/). This seems to be the most successful so far; however, like AI, it does fail to interpret jokes and certain meanings of sentences. [Tom Scott](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pU9sHwNKc2c) explains the reasoning behind this very well. I would love some testers who can provide input on where and what to improve. I am also thinking of reworking the backend and adding a scheduler that picks up new subtitles. Any help and constructive feedback are highly appreciated! Did you consider integration with Bazaar? Or - did you evaluate bazaar for your need? I'm pretty happy with it, it has 'translate' option - yet (as I'm happy enough with English subtitles) I didn't test it so far. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lingarr · 2023-12-20 18:18 Thanks for that info! While I wasn't aware of the translation option, the difference I found is that Bazarr uses Google Translate, and this app is fully self-hosted. I will definitely try Bazarr's translation option, and I will have to look into integration, but I must mention that their API is very limited. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- acdcfanbill · 2023-12-20 18:43 Yeah, this project might be better as an extension to bazaar if the devs are amenable. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ptichalouf1 · 2023-12-20 19:15 Could you put your docker app on unraid please ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- stachumann · 2023-12-20 20:46 Btw, I have tried different solutions for translations too - sometimes I'd like to have subtitles in my language, especially for British English 😬 Even tried to use chatgpt - through API. Honestly - nothing worked good, usually - because context of translation is lost. At least - that's my best guess. The idea - maybe - would be to recognize action in the movie (again - self hosted Llama on high performance GPU?) - but that would be probably a huge project... can't imagine how to do that better... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lingarr · 2023-12-20 21:54 Will do, thing is they go wild after a few hundred calls, sometimes not even responding or responding in the same language. It's very prone to errors. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ParkingPsychology · 2023-12-21 00:02 Looks like it's typoed or autoerrect. It's bazarr, not bazaar. https://www.bazarr.media/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Starmina · 2023-12-21 00:07 Damn I hate Autoerrect in the morning ---------------------------------------------------------------------- moostmartijn · 2023-12-21 09:18 I will definitely try this. I was looking for a free subtitle translator that works good enough to use it for a long time. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lingarr · 2023-12-21 09:21 I've looked into it briefly, but I am afraid that's not possible. At least, I don't know if it is, as LibreTranslate needs to be built locally, and it looks like Unraid doesn't support that. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ptichalouf1 · 2023-12-21 10:42 Maybe could you make the same stuff with google translate ? Like that we dont need to pay the monthly subscription and honestly that work already well on bazarr but we cannot automatically translate all our sub. Thanks for your time and work ---------------------------------------------------------------------- stachumann · 2023-12-21 10:45 I hate it too! :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Chiccocarone · 2023-12-21 12:18 It's looks exactly like what I was looking for ima definitely try it. I just have one question if it's on docker hub why do I have to build it manually to use docker compose?
