Are these HDDs too close to each other? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wildfox32 路 2023-12-20 10:44 Noob here. I have stacked two old HDDs to an old pc and I was wondering if the space between drives is enough or if they are too tight? Based on what I've seen online it seems to be ok but I'd like to have a confirmation and any other suggestions on recommended practices ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GamerDoubleD 路 2023-12-20 10:58 With decent airflow this shouldn't be a Problem ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 4AGTE 路 2023-12-20 11:44 I have 8 HDDs stacked closely in an old ATX case, with one being in the floppy drive slot. So I've removed the plastic front panel and added 3 120mm fans, now all drives run at around 27 degrees C. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TibRib0 路 2023-12-20 11:44 It's totally ok 馃憤 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheLazyGamerAU 路 2023-12-20 12:00 No thats why the case is spaced the way it is. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- JakeSully-Navi 路 2023-12-20 12:06 Idk if bottom slot is meant for a HDD. That looks to be a bay for a floppy drive or something else. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Xiakit 路 2023-12-20 12:32 Depends how long they've known each other ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Worldly-Device-8414 路 2023-12-20 12:37 No issue with some airflow. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mrXmuzzz 路 2023-12-20 12:46 Damn ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SWAFSWAF 路 2023-12-20 13:11 Now to code an HDD dating simulator. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- _NETWATCH 路 2023-12-20 13:29 i don't know, how close are you to your data? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] 路 2023-12-20 13:33 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ChewsGoose 路 2023-12-20 13:35 They're good as long as there's enough room for Jesus ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cranberry-strawberry 路 2023-12-20 14:02 They're adequately spaced apart. Your wires are just getting in the way ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Few_Philosopher_905 路 2023-12-20 14:03 Any closer and they'll make a 2.5" drive together ---------------------------------------------------------------------- popnfrresh 路 2023-12-20 14:08 They need to be at least 24.8 feet away from each other per tia spec ---------------------------------------------------------------------- darklogic85 路 2023-12-20 14:33 The space is fine, as long as there's some kind of airflow over them. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CEDoromal 路 2023-12-20 14:33 Insert hard pp (HPP) joke pls ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FeralSquirrels 路 2023-12-20 14:44 I'm almost positive that the same distance or _less_ is completely standard on most cases historically for the past ~20yrs if not longer. Hell, I'm sure I still have a case that has them arrayed just as close if not more, it's perfectly safe/fine and the only point would be to ensure they have decent airflow, hence most cases have had these at the front with the fans blowing over/between them. Half the time I had more fuss trying to cable manage and get enough power/SATA to them without worrying about how close they were :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SqeuakyPants 路 2023-12-20 15:02 Imagine they're on one sata powerline... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Scavenger53 路 2023-12-20 15:03 they are not close enough https://www.backblaze.com/blog/wp- content/uploads/2016/04/blog-60-drives-ooh-aah.jpg ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hannsr 路 2023-12-20 15:03 Careful, I heard the old timers are into some serious master/slave action. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SaleB81 路 2023-12-20 15:12 The best indicator would be to check temperatures. If they are too high, thnk about additional air flow, if they are fine, then there is no problem. Check the temperatures both in idle and under load. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- avatar_of_prometheus 路 2023-12-20 15:18 We stack them closer in servers. Spinning disks are okay being stacked close. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Effective-Media-3373 路 2023-12-20 15:24 You might end up with some unwanted 2.5 inch drives all of the sudden, but other than that. If it is in a close room or closet and does get warm, I would add fans in the side or between or somewhere around to improve air flow. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wkm001 路 2023-12-20 16:04 Not enough space if you live in Utah. Airflow is key. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kmisterk 路 2023-12-20 17:08 ## Post Removed Hey, wildfox32! Thanks for your submission on selfhosted.
