Recommendations for a business reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- stupidostrich · 2023-12-20 02:45 Hi all I'm starting a business in design consulting, and am trying to figure out how to setup a secure server and services for business use. Ideally I would hire a professional (and hopefully retain them) to handle this for me, but that will be years down the line until I can afford to, so for now I would have to make do with my own knowledge. My business requires me to keep all my created information for legal concerns (which can run into easily 100GB per project), and I also need to have a system to handle CRM as well as maintain a custom knowledgebase. Would like to know what advice the community has for my use cases. I've outlined my current plans below: **Microsoft 365 Business Standard subscription** The nature of my work requires me to handle quite a bit of Microsoft Word and Excel "official" forms, and sometimes files would have to be shared with in a "team" of people. My most current projects and files are all in my OneDrive folder, locally synced ("always keep on this device"). Each partner in the business keeps their OneDrive folders backed up to separate private Backblaze B2 Buckets with Duplicati. **VPS on DigitalOcean** This VPS holds all my systems - my website, my custom knowledgebase solution, my CRM, my database. I have Yunohost running on the VPS, mainly because I like how easy it is to install some applications and make redirects to other services I have running, plus whatever security they offer. My website is a simple Node application, which is redirected to using the Yunohost redirection app. My CRM and knowledgebase however, are separate Directus installations on Docker, both reading information from a MariaDB installation, also on docker. Files uploaded to Directus are sent to a private Backblaze B2 bucket. I redirect specific subdomains to these installations using Yunohost as well. I need these systems on the public internet, as my work takes me out of the office half the time. Backups are currently handled by Digitalocean, but I'm looking for a better way to do it. **Local Server** This is a separate computer on my local network. When projects are completed, they compressed, then sent to an archiving folder in this computer. I have Duplicati set to backup this archiving folder to another private Backblaze B2 Bucket (at this point this sounds like an ad for them) every 12 hours, keeping 60-day revisions. What I want to do with this local server is for it to act as a fallback server - in the event that the VPS on DigitalOcean stops working, or my internet access gets cut off, I want to still be able to access my CRM and knowledgebase information on this local server. This means that the MariaDB installation would need to be replicated - I'm still figuring out how I can setup Master-Master replication without losing data. I'm also still figuring out how I can keep the files uploaded to Directus replicated on this server. Have I done anything wrong? How else can I improve? I've never been trained in anything IT and most of my knowledge around self-hosting just comes from reading this subreddit and old forums. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- adamshand · 2023-12-20 07:23 I wouldn’t do a multi-master MySQL setup if what you care about is disaster recovery. Just do normal replication. It’s much simpler. If you lose your primary MySQL you can change dns and make the replica RW. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cypressthatkid · 2023-12-24 19:37 For hosting, try out https://exodushost.com. They have the best VPS servers for the best prices seen. They’re running a Christmas sale for 50% off until the 31st right now, but regardless prices are always good.
