Total newb needs help reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GeximuZ · 2023-12-20 00:20 Hi all, I recently started experimenting with hosting my own server and buying a domain. Now I'm having massive issues trying to get my webserver connected to my domain and being able to access it over the internet. I'm using apache on a windows PC as the webserver, bought my domain on Vimexx and I have to use a DDNS service like no-ip because I'm unable to get a static ipv6 address. I'm unsure to what DNS settings I have to configure on my domain and also unsure to where I have to point my apache config (my domain name or the DUC DDNS name? The real reason I want all of this to work is because I want to host a private website and be able to remote connect to my jellyfin server through my domain. E.g. jellyfin.mydomain.com. (this via port 443 for extra security) I hope any one here can shed some light and help me out! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GrilledChickenWings · 2023-12-20 01:02 I believe the windows server PC is at your home. This would mean you should be able to route requests coming to internet IP to this internal windows PC IP. This will require port forwarding to be enabled in router. To enable port forwarding, Does your ISP give you an internet IP or a CGNAT IP ? If its CGNAT, things get little complicated and you need to use service like tailscale etc. if its an Internet IP, you can install nginix reverse proxy on your windows PC and forward requests your port 80 of webserver. BTW i wont recommend running a web server on a PC, due to power consumption in long term and stability. you should look from some NAS solutions. Also if your home internet where this PC is located is not extremely high speed (especially upload) , streaming video from externally will be very slow and lag. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GeximuZ · 2023-12-20 12:02 >internet IP or a CGNAT IP I currently use a desktop pc running windows as a server in my own home yes. My ISP gives me an internet IP over IPv6. At least I think so ([telenet.be](https://telenet.be)) how can I verify this? My internet speed at home is 1000mbps download and 40mbps upload, I currently use port-forwarding to view my Jellyfin outside of my private network and this runs very well. I'm currently using Apache but I'm unable to get it to work, do you suggest it's easier if I would try Nginx? Is it also possible to use port 443 instead of 80? I'd like the extra security Also, since my IPv6 address is constantly changing I'd need to use something like NO-IP. Is there anything better or simpler to use then this? I hear about Cloudflare tunnels though I don't have any experience with this yet. Thanks ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jonathanhimself · 2023-12-20 15:16 Hi ! If you want to spare yourself the hassle of having to set up a DDNS and forwarding several ports, you could opt to have your domain's DNS handled by Cloudflare (It's free) and then set up an ssh tunnel to Cloudflare Zero Trust. It's really easy and you can then setup the services you want to accept traffic to and from. It's much easier than it seems. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GeximuZ · 2023-12-20 20:29 I'm currently looking into this option, thanks for suggesting it! Do you know if its also possible to host a webserver using this tunneling technology? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jonathanhimself · 2023-12-21 13:37 Yes. Absolutely.
