Cheapest dedicated server with multiple IPs reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- amitjain679 · 2023-12-19 06:09 I am almost beginner in server things and started using vps since last year. Have multiple vps right now as need to use different application which require full control of vps. I am thinking to subscribe to one dedicated server and create multiple vps for my use. I believe each vps will require different IP as well. Also, what would be the best application to create vps in dedicated server? Virtualizor? (not much aware on how to partition the dedicated server into multiple vps) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NikStalwart · 2023-12-19 06:48 IPs are usually an addon. These days, additional IPv4s are charged at $1-$3/month/IP. If you're paying more than $3/month, it is a ripoff. If you only want less than 4, buy them individually. If you want more than that, you can typically get a small sub-allocation like a /28 or /29 from your provider and that may (but will not always be) cheaper. IPv6 is practically free. You can get free /48 through a lot of providers and then allocate as many as you want. You can also rent /44v6 for something like $20/year directly from a LIR and announce it yourself. There is no "cheapest X" in this category. Everything is spec- dependent. I suggest haunting LowEndBox/LowEndTalk for provider offers. I would also suggest waiting around for typical sale periods (Black Friday/July 4/etc). Hetzner **never** has sales. OVH has frequent sales and there is *zero* point buying unless there is a sale on. As for hypervisor: I prefer qemu/kvm. I do things manually. People on this sub will swear *by* proxmox. I will swear *at* proxmox. The larger dedicated providers have hypervisor images built in. At the smaller ones you will need to install yourself. I have used Online.net, Hetzner, OVH and Psychz as vendors. I have heard good things about Leaseweb and NFOrce, but have always been too cheap to actually rent from them. They have good mid-tier heardware for mid-tier prices but nothing good in the <$50/month range. You might also consider colocating. Some datacenters will go as low as $30/month for a 1U server, and you can get some okay-ish 1U used hardware off of ebay for relatively cheap. This is not an option in Australia. Colo here *starts* at AU$150 per RU, so it does not make financial sense. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheoSunny · 2023-12-19 07:21 This guy vpses ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NikStalwart · 2023-12-19 07:25 Guilty. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Salzig · 2023-12-19 07:50 Hetzner maybe never has sales, but it has the server auction which may give you a good cheaper then of the shelf option: https://www.hetzner.com/sb ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NikStalwart · 2023-12-19 08:01 Definitely love the server auctions! From experience, E3v5, E3v6 are cheaper than competitors, but you also have to be cautious and compare to their current-gen offers. When you get into the €50 range, it begins to make sense to rent a current-gen server and ask for additional hardware. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- p_235615 · 2023-12-19 09:27 Well, so far I could not find anything that would beat their Ryzen 5900X systems with 128GB of RAM and 2TB of NVMe for 60Eur/mo from Hetzner auctions. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NikStalwart · 2023-12-19 09:33 That would have been a pretty good deal! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- p_235615 · 2023-12-19 09:44 Sorry, mistakenly wrote the wrong CPU, its not Ryzen 5900 but 3900. But still its an incredible bargain, and they still have them for less than 60E/mo: https://www.hetzner.com/sb?ram_from=128&search=3900 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NikStalwart · 2023-12-19 10:06 3900 is a different story - you can get AX61 for a few euro more with a current-gen CPU. Which goes to my point of getting comparable (or almost comparable) performance when you cross the €50 mark. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- p_235615 · 2023-12-19 10:28 > AX61 that is no longer in their offer... The closes thing they have there is probably AX52 https://www.hetzner.com/dedicated-rootserver/ax52 but thats Ryzen 7700 with only 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe and for 70E/mo... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NikStalwart · 2023-12-19 10:29 Depends on the VAT. For me it is only €65/month. Also, it is 2tb NVMe (2 disks @ 1TB each). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- p_235615 · 2023-12-19 10:41 Still, you missing 2TB of disk space (those 3900 systems have 2x2TB) and 64GB of RAM, which for example in our application much more essential than the CPU power... That AX52 with 128GB of RAM would cost me 94Eur/mo, 113Eur/mo with 4TB of NVMe... Thats a completely different price bracket. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NikStalwart · 2023-12-19 11:07 Fair enough re the extra 64GB RAM. There was a time they had i7 8700s with 128GB for 33€, but that gravy train ended early November. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AnomalyNexus · 2023-12-19 23:36 > Hetzner never has sales. Sorta. They did just have a sale where they forfeited the setup fee on their dedis. Equates to around 50 bucks once off ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NikStalwart · 2023-12-20 00:15 I don't consider that a 'sale' because it is a set-up fee, and they tend to waive it several times throughout the year. But, on a server that you will be using for 24+ months, the price of an extra month is not really a true 'sale'. Also, setup fees are only for new hardware, not the server auction stuff.
