question about custom nameservers reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nixiepet · 2023-12-18 17:45 On my domain registrar I've added \*\*x.ns.domain.ext\*\* and \*\*y.ns.domain.ext\*\* and bound it to IP of a vps running bind9, than i've changed nameservers of the domain itself to those two. webserver and dns are two differenct vps instances. this is my zone and bind config: https://preview.redd.it/uwtrzytvb37c1.png?width=1168&format=png&auto=w ebp&s=2dce55198f57fc45127fc8e5e4feb255600b1a7b my question is: do i also need PTR records, or do i simply wait for propagation? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kmisterk · 2023-12-18 17:51 This isn't strictly self-hosted. however, you would need Glue records at your registrar for it to be the *most* official. Once those are up, you should be good after propagation. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kmisterk · 2023-12-18 17:51 ## Post Removed Hey, nixiepet! I am hoping to test some changes come the new year. Keep in mind that propagation globally can take awhile. Keep an eye on https://dnschecker.org to make sure your seeing global changes take place. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nixiepet · 2023-12-18 17:59 domain + A record = some show X some proper IP, domain + NS record = some show X some new ns some old ns guess it should be ready to go in few hours/days. thank you for the help! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kmisterk · 2023-12-18 18:00 Sounds about right. Should be all set soon. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nixiepet · 2023-12-18 18:23 yeaa i think im getting there now instead of ERR\_NAME\_NOT\_RESOLVED im getting ERR\_TUNNEL\_CONNECTION\_FAILED. probably will have to reset the other VPS's nginx ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kmisterk · 2023-12-18 18:25 Yep, that seems to be true. One step closer! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nixiepet · 2023-12-18 23:50 yep it works now! I've written a post about it lol https://nixie.pet/blog/Dont-do-DNS-if-you-value-sanity
