New open source self-hosted cloud storage: Voltaserve reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- elias_ba · 2023-12-18 16:04 Voltaserve is a new open source self-hosted cloud storage, check it out: [https://voltaserve.com](https://voltaserve.com) GitHub repository: [https://github.com/kouprlabs/voltaserve](https://g ithub.com/kouprlabs/voltaserve) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- poeticmichael · 2023-12-18 16:24 What security protocols have been implemented in this project? 2FA, Yubikey support? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- elias_ba · 2023-12-18 16:30 2FA will be added soon. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tomistruth · 2023-12-18 18:51 Which host providers do you support? What is the problem you try to solve? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- elias_ba · 2023-12-18 18:54 It can be hosted anywhere. The goal is to have an open source cloud storage that can be self- hosted, and stands out with the following USPs: \- A permission system that is comparable to a data room, layered across: organizations, groups and individuals. \- The ability to group files in isolated workspaces. \- File search is quick; covers file content and file names, all from one unified search box. \- Leverage of WebDAV to stay compatible with every client software. \- Lightweight and built on a scalable modern tech stack. \- Nice UI. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tomistruth · 2023-12-18 19:13 So it's self hosted, what about the cloud? Doesn't cloud imply multi server hosting and maybe cloud providers like aws buckets etc? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- elias_ba · 2023-12-18 19:23 It can as well be hosted on public cloud providers like: AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, etc. That would give your Voltaserve instance a higher scalability and reliability. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- m3shat · 2023-12-18 20:56 Are you looking at authentication mechanisms such as openid or SAML? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- elias_ba · 2023-12-18 20:58 I am indeed considering OpenID Connect. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- m3shat · 2023-12-18 21:01 Oh, that's great! Does the WebDAV work well with Windows explorer? (and Excel/Word and their (broken) file locking) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- elias_ba · 2023-12-18 21:31 It does, I made sure it works well for that exact use case, just use any third party software that mounts on the Windows Explorer like Mountainduck. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- adamshand · 2023-12-18 22:08 There's not much information on either of the sites you link to. What makes this "next generation"? It looks like a webdav front end with an S3 backend? What's the monetisation plan? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nerdyviking88 · 2023-12-18 22:20 No docs No demo No info This is a web front end to "something" Needs more info. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- elias_ba · 2023-12-18 22:24 I believe that enterprise customers will love it for many reasons as such: \- It has a permission system that is comparable to a virtual data room, which is layered across: organizations, groups and individuals. \- Gives the ability to group documents in isolated workspaces. \- File search is quick and efficient; covers file content and file names, all from one unified search box. It's also worth mentioning that virtual data room software is rarely if "never" available as open source. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- elias_ba · 2023-12-18 22:34 A "Getting started" documentation for users is indeed available on the README.md of the GitHub repository, it includes a "Troubleshooting" FAQ section that I keep expending whenever the users stumble upon some issues. The REST APIs are documented with OpenAPI/Swagger/Redocly. As it's a very new project, I keep adding more documentation, and there is also a lot of pending work on the website. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- m3shat · 2023-12-18 22:44 Oh okay, sadly a third party mounting tool is not an option in my environment ---------------------------------------------------------------------- adamshand · 2023-12-18 22:50 I've never heard of a virtual data room, but from a quick Google it's a basically a folder that can be securely shared with external collaborators? How is that different from what NextCloud does? Are you saying that continue to live in their normal home, but can also be temporarily put into a "data room" for some sort of legal process? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- elias_ba · 2023-12-18 23:05 To draw a simple picture, you could say that a data room is basically: Cloud storage + advanced permission system + automatic snapshots to maintain file history + ability to mirror your organization's structure with groups/teams. Data rooms are usually used in critical processes like Due Diligence. Mainstream cloud storage solution don't offer all this because it's not needed. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- No_Dragonfruit_5882 · 2023-12-19 05:49 So exactly all the things that nextcloud does? But ofc Nextcloud has documentation / support etc. Are you trying to reinvent the wheel? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- No_Dragonfruit_5882 · 2023-12-19 05:50 Not to talk shit about your Tool, but it just like Nextcloud but worse. Sorry my dude. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- This-Gene1183 · 2023-12-19 07:13 Who cares. It might be a nicer wheel. Maybe not better but give it time. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- elightcap · 2023-12-19 07:49 What kind of mfa? SMS? U2F? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IanParry · 2023-12-19 08:02 I'm looking to give this a go later , when i get home.. Can i ask how it is worse than nextcloud? If i need a basic "file storage and share" only app ( without the bells and whistles) of Nextcloud , would this suit me ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IanParry · 2023-12-19 08:19 In Docker-Compose - where is the location for "Local storage" ? Please ---------------------------------------------------------------------- No_Dragonfruit_5882 · 2023-12-19 08:20 I dont know man, Nextcloud can be small and compact aswell if you deactivate most of the Features. I mean it might be good, but i wouldnt trust this thing with Company / My most important data. Its worse in this way => +Isnt used by as many people +There arent many people testing it / Coding it +No Audits Correct me if iam wrong tho. And i understand that a small App needs time etc to Grow. Maybe i just expected too much for now. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- YankeeLimaVictor · 2023-12-19 08:59 Does it support encrypted file storage, with client-side encryption? I have been searching for a MEGA alternative for a while. But, by default, nextcloud doesn't encrypt the file names and structure, and if you activate this feature on nextcloud, it only barely works on the desktop client. No web client. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- elias_ba · 2023-12-19 12:23 The plan is to first have MFA working with an authentication app or SMS. Then add more 2FA methods gradually with time. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- elias_ba · 2023-12-19 12:28 Files are stored in MinIO. In Docker Compose file, there is a `minio` service with an attached volume, your files will be stored there. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- elias_ba · 2023-12-19 12:33 Right now client-side encryption is not yet implemented. But the architecture is built in a way that allows adding this functionality. That would be surely something interesting to work on. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IanParry · 2023-12-19 12:59 Nice one . . I will give this a whirl a bit later.. Thank you ---------------------------------------------------------------------- elias_ba · 2023-12-19 12:59 Nextcloud/ownCloud doesn't have a permission system that is comparable to a data room, which is layered across organizations, groups and individuals. And it doesn't allow isolating files into workspaces. Plus, the UI of Voltaserve is nicer. Additionally, the tech stack of Voltaserve is very different, it's more lightweight and scalable. The project is new, so more documentation will be added gradually. Nevertheless, the installation process is fully automated with Docker Compose, and it's documented in the GitHub repository. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- No_Dragonfruit_5882 · 2023-12-19 13:21 Well not going to use it. And ofcouse the developer always says their ui is nicer. Imo Nextcloud is cleaner and more userfriendly ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Initial-Repeat9146 · 2023-12-19 15:13 > I mean it might be good, but i wouldnt trust this thing with Company / My most important data. You can audit the code, that's what I'm doing at the moment as well as testing it. So far it seems like a pretty good project even if it's early phase. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- asosnovsky · 2023-12-19 16:08 Looks interesting and it seems to be built in a way that has the potential to trump Nextcloud in terms of scaling (In my case I’ve always dreaded not being able to scale out Nextcloud properly, I’m seeing you split this into horizontally scalable microservices written in go, as opposed to a single php monster that is Nextcloud). If I were you I’d write up a roadmap and add a small write up on your goals. Like doing some future integrations with immich, paperless-ngx, or app for background syncs would be really awesome. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Lemimouth · 2023-12-19 19:21 Why post this without EVEN a minimal description of its purpose? Update your GitHub readme to include, at the least, a brief summary of the purpose your tool. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- elias_ba · 2023-12-19 19:44 The GitHub readme does have a screencast GIF + documentation that explains how to run and troubleshoot the software. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- No_Dragonfruit_5882 · 2023-12-19 21:04 I still remember the color library in nodejs. Started to nuke russian Servers with a new Update, so yeah. You can Audit it now, but each time a Update comes you need to Audit it again ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Initial-Repeat9146 · 2023-12-19 22:50 That's the downside of selfhosting depending on how you look at it. You either validate the code or rely on others to do it. I don't really host anything serious that I can't validate myself these days. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PowerfulAttorney3780 · 2023-12-19 23:48 So let's just keep using shit cuz it's status quo eh. Okay Henry Ford. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PowerfulAttorney3780 · 2023-12-19 23:48 I'm sorry all these people are shitting on your tool, this is why people are afraid to post shit. I'll check it out my dude!
