i5 7500 & 16 GB RAM - enough for plex? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- iizakill · 2023-12-18 12:03 Ebay Link: https://www.ebay.com/itm/293713688571?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkri d=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=3a-LIWC4Tr2&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=vvgOVcYhSs- &var=593572628741&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY I am thinking of buying this for my dedicated home server. I want to mainly run Plex on it. I only stream it locally for my TV at home. It's one 4K device streaming, maybe 2 in future. Is this device capable enough to handle it? Or what specs should I be looking at? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jobarr · 2023-12-18 12:07 Yes, 7th gen with hardware transcoding is good depending on your needs: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel\_Quick\_Sync\_Video#Hardware\_dec oding\_and\_encoding](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_Quick_Sync_V ideo#Hardware_decoding_and_encoding) 16 GB is fine for a few streams for sure. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- djgizmo · 2023-12-18 12:46 Yes. Anything 6th gen and above is good enough. Rocked lower than that for most things for a decade. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nikonel · 2023-12-18 12:58 Yes, just make sure to run Plex on top of Linux ---------------------------------------------------------------------- iizakill · 2023-12-18 13:03 That's the plan!! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- iizakill · 2023-12-18 13:04 This is very helpful, ty!! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hereisjames · 2023-12-18 13:13 16GB is more than enough for Plex and a lot more besides. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dazchad · 2023-12-18 13:48 My i5 7500 don’t handle 4k h265 playback well (haven’t tried just transcoding though). 8th gen or newer handles it better. And I haven’t benchmarked plain h264, which should be less demanding. As for the price, seems to by pricey. I have a similar system and I paid 45 for it. Granted, there’s no warranty or anything, and it was on local marketplace. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mario24601 · 2023-12-18 16:39 Which Linux? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ewixy750 · 2023-12-18 17:46 Ubuntu (server) & Debian They are the go to usually, specially if you don't want to have a headache ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ItsPwn · 2023-12-18 20:28 Give Synology DSM a try for nas use ,there is inbuilt Plex app Go to releases for USB image https://github.com/AuxXxilium/arc /r/xpenology ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mario24601 · 2023-12-18 22:04 Thanks, trying to learn how to use ubuntu server ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ewixy750 · 2023-12-18 23:52 It's just Ubuntu but without the desktop environment You can try using normal Ubuntu and get familiar with using the command lines, installing packages with it etc I still have a laptop used as a server that has Lubuntu for minimal desktop interface ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cw823 · 2023-12-19 02:55 Bad price for 7th gen
