Intel W680 DDR5 and ECC Reporting reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Former_Abroad7819 · 2023-12-18 09:36 Good day everyone, I am planning to update all my noisy and slow xeons to w680 for many reasons. To test, I bought just one, built it and was able to get a "working" ECC but found that no reporting was available yet! The question is, if ECC reporting is not implemented yet, how will the OS know that there is corruption and lock or shutdown itself? If a RAM stick in fault then it will corrupt the OS and anything else in the way without the OS even noticing it, Im I missing something here? Does anyone have a stable and working am5 with 128gb ecc ram working in correction and reporting? * Mobo Asus w680 * CPU 13900k stock * Ram 128gb Kingston ECC 4800 * OS Debian 12 Kernel 6.5.13 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Legitimate_Farm_3095 · 2023-12-18 12:52 this has nothing to do with self hosting ---------------------------------------------------------------------- vermyx · 2023-12-18 14:53 ECC is for creating a fault tolerant system. ECC is checking with memory access to validate the checksum. With faults, memory is written elsewhere and your system becomes slower as it has to do extra work with the checksuming but it keeps running. The OS alert is for telling the human there’s an issue not telling the OS there’s a problem. Rarely will you want to actually shutdown the OS with an ECC issue and you never want to lock up the OS. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kmisterk · 2023-12-18 17:25 ## Post Removed Hey, Former_Abroad7819!
