How to make sure your solutions is up 99.9% of the time. A 5$/VPS will have a better track record than your home server in terms of uptime. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- minahany96 · 2023-12-18 06:05 thank you which vps service would you recommend ---------------------------------------------------------------------- minahany96 · 2023-12-18 06:08 would a combo of a 10g nic, a dream machine pro, and a uninterruptible power supply solve this issue? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 83736294827 · 2023-12-18 06:11 no ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-12-18 06:11 Not sure what a UPS has to do with a 10G network, but sure, UPS never hurts. The Ubiquiti Dream Machine Pro can IDS/IPS at 3.5G, so that would suffice yes. Don’t forget 10G switches for all the rest of your network. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-12-18 06:12 Since I never used a VPS’s I can’t recommend you one. I guess get the once closes to your region since most customers will be at your location in your country, so the closer the servers, the better for latency. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Shot_Entertainment93 · 2023-12-18 07:15 Linode is a good one and they have preconfigured ones for websites hosting. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- orgildinio · 2023-12-18 10:57 better host on vps. i recommend digitalocean or linode for cheap but good uptime ---------------------------------------------------------------------- minahany96 · 2023-12-19 05:05 i get that vps is more cost effective i forgot to mention tho that i want this as a way of practice and to gain experience as i’m very new to the whole community i only started being serious about it in january this year ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sk1nT7 · 2023-12-26 22:40 As mentioned by others, you may face several problems when selfhosting a professional, exposed website: 1. Uptime 2. Backups 3. Security **Part 1** Your server won't be running all the time. There may be an outage or your ISP goes down and therefore the Internet connectivity. Using a VPS instead, you gain a much better uptime and stability. There are also SLAs and contracts you can rely on. **Part 2** Many VPS hosting providers offer an easy web management panel to create backups/snapshots of your VPS. If selfhosted, you would have to manage backups (3-2-1 strategy) by yourself. **Part 3** As the website is exposed to the Internet, it will be hit by threat actors and automated bots constantly. So you have to put some effort into securing your server. Not once but regularly. Otherwise the server may be compromised and so your internal network, which is bad. Security is also important on a VPS, sure. However, it would not automatically compromise your internal (home) network too. Furthermore, you could easily recover from a previously taken snapshot and then track down the reasons of compromise and fix. There won't be other assets targeted, as the VPS is the sole asset available (compared to your home network running other stuff or being used by people). **General** If you just want to learn and start selfhosting, I'd recommend starting small and not with a productive service exposed on the Internet. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- minahany96 · 2023-12-28 07:40 thank you for your response after reading opinions here i think a vps is the best option honestly
