Docker solution for self-hosting emails reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hirakath · 2023-12-18 00:47 I want to self-host my emails from a domain I purchased. I already have a bunch of Docker containers running for a few services that I self-host and I would like to add one for being able to send and receive emails using a domain that I own. I want to be able to create an unlimited number of email accounts and unlimited storage space for these accounts (not that it will ever end up getting to that point), I also want to be able to connect to it via SMTP so I can set it up on my mobile and desktop email clients. Any possible ones I could look at and research? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NikStalwart · 2023-12-18 01:09 What have you tried already? Did you look at: * https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/List_of_applications * https://github.com/awesome-selfhosted/awesome- selfhosted#communication---email---complete-solutions ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hirakath · 2023-12-18 01:13 I was looking into it a few days ago and I believe I saw stuff like Dovecot, SpamAssassin etc but all of those are independent entities that I don’t want to have to set up one by one. I’m hoping there’s already a Docker solution that I could just grab the compose file and run from there. I tried setting up a mail server a long time ago and it was too complicated for my knowledge so I gave up on it. I am looking for a very easy solution where I could just point my domain to it and create accounts and all that stuff without much of a hassle. I will take a look at those links. Thank you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Vangoss05 · 2023-12-18 02:40 Mailcow ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Internal_Seesaw5612 · 2023-12-18 02:48 Mailu has been solid and was easy to setup. Though email is one of the more complex services to configure and monitor that can be compromised easily. If you go in with the idea that someone has a one click and forget it solution you will end up with something like a open relay. Once configured you'll need some way to monitor it and fight off the bots as time goes on. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cantcooktoast · 2023-12-18 06:51 Don’t. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TBT_TBT · 2023-12-18 07:10 Don’t do it on a DSL or Cable connection. Probably even not end customer fiber. SMTP connections from such IPs are flagged as spam sources, because most of the time zombified pcs are sending out spam this way. You will need a virtual or dedicated server or an SMTP smart host through which you send mails. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- housepanther2000 · 2023-12-18 11:31 I'm with you there. As much as I'd like to host my own email, Zoho offers email hosting for 12.99 a year which includes 10GB of storage. That's less than the electricity I'd use to self-host. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- housepanther2000 · 2023-12-18 11:32 Often those email relays can be expensive too. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RedditSlayer2020 · 2023-12-18 11:39 Please use spf, dkim, dmarc, ptr record when selfhosting email, big data will make it easier for you to get your mails through ---------------------------------------------------------------------- arcadianarcadian · 2023-12-18 12:48 First of all, if you have no experience (with any email servers, DNS records, SMTP or IMAP protocols, etc.) I do not suggest self-hosting email for mission-critical services. Although I have experience for years in those email hosting services, I gave up email hosting because I missed an email for a rental flat in Berlin. \* Berliners can understand me well :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cantcooktoast · 2023-12-19 16:34 Yeah, I'm obviously a big self-hosting advocate (obviously) but there's a select few things that are not worth the cost and hassle. Email is one of them in my opinion (and if you search this sub, lots of others).
