Unique Situation reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jonyskids · 2023-12-18 00:36 I have a pi that hosts gluetun, transmission, prowlarr, flaresolverr, sonarr, radarr, undunhealth, cloudflared, cloudflare ddns & jellyfin. I take it on the road when traveling...say to Panama. I hook it up to my lodging's wifi. Down load watch what I want to watch. I have been wondering how to make it more secure on the local network being I have no access to the router? Maybe hide ports on local netwok, (scary if cliudflare goes down...) Reverse proxy? But router will not point to it....is there a way for my pi to receive request on ip:port and return https url? Open to suggestions and path to reach them. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- what-shoe · 2023-12-18 00:57 Why would you physically bring the pi with you? I would set up remote access and leave it home… If the concern is download/upload speed, then address it from that point. If download in Panama is the bottleneck, and you are worried this will cause buffering, then set up SFTP access and download your move files from the Pi to your personal device. If the concern is upload speed at home then maybe this would warrant bringing the pi. To answer your initial question: if you have no control over the wifi router then you should assume all of your traffic could be inspected by its owner. The only way around this is a VPN. To add, if the router doesn’t have UPnP enabled (very likely for a public router) then transmission won’t be able to use the forwarded port. As a result, you will see severely reduced download speeds. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jonyskids · 2023-12-18 01:17 Yes upload at the home base is slow....I often have no wifi where I am at and want to watch a movie. (Caretaker for remote island in Maine in the summer. Only cell at my cabin...owner had starlink. Plugged in during the day, movie at night in the cabin.) I have not had any issues with transmission downloading what I want at a reasonable speed. (I have found that sonarr/radarr if run through gluetun kind dump the connection on occasion while transmission prowlarr do not.) I assume the router owner could sniff out what I am doing but find most people not savvy enough or give a rip. I check speeds and if I see a dump or catch wind that others are frustrated with speeds, I just shut down or run off hours. Was hoping that, if someone saw the traffic on my ip and port that I could block them from seeing the website but still get to it myself without having to go through cloudflared tunnel. May be overkill to be honest but would implement if found a way.
