Immich vs Synology photos reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cavernerg · 2023-12-17 20:07 Well... Like the title says .. anyone here who tried both and can compare? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Simplixt · 2023-12-17 20:14 Individual decision, just try it out? Selfhoster should have a natural curiosity to try out new things ;) If you want a stable and easy to maintain solution, use Synology Photos. I mean, you paid the high price for the Synology software, not the underwhelming hardware \^\^ If you want a state of the art project with high development speed and great AI and map features, try Immich .. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- getgoingfast · 2023-12-17 20:22 Funny you mention, underwhelming hardware, almost 2024 and they still put 1Gbps Ethernet when almost all lower end played have moved on to 2.5G. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cavernerg · 2023-12-17 20:25 Well it's work to do, that should bring a thing to the table. Can't see much of a benefit in the description so it should be in the handling etc.. so I thought, I gather some input ;-) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mintfresh22 · 2023-12-17 21:08 Yes. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NotTryingToConYou · 2023-12-17 21:15 For my non-techy sister, I have a Synology Photos setup. Works great and is hosted at her home with an occasional rsync backup to my NAS. For my somewhat techy sister, who lives with me, I have Immich set up. She liked the google photos, so those features were important. She understands that, though rarely the service might be down, the data is safe and can be backed up in case anything goes wrong. For both of them, the need came from rising storage costs. If they were okay with paying, I would have recommended that first because I ended up being the maintainer and customer support. To answer your question, SP offers fewer features and is a bit sluggish but is more stable, in my opinion. Immich is faster (partially because my NAS is faster) and offers really cool features. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cavernerg · 2023-12-17 21:17 Thank you, that's a nice overview ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dazzling_Ad1507 · 2023-12-17 21:26 I just set up an Immich instance today and its been great! I def recommend it! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tomhung · 2023-12-18 06:18 When you edit the data on Synology photos the data is stored in the file no one external database. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Shtou · 2023-12-18 08:35 What do you recommend in terms of Synology competition? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- helmut72 · 2023-12-19 06:31 Synology Photos supports all file formats I use. From HEIC, HEIF to 360° photos and videos from my Insta360. Also their companion app for iOS and Android just works. Especially if I don't use it for a long time on iOS I get the notification that I should start it because it doesn't sync in the background anymore. But be warned: My usecase is just backup my media files and from time to time, I sort special events into their own folders and casual photos into other folders, where a timeline from all is enough. For special case I have dynamic albums, that assembles media from tags and folder names.
